61. Billy Budd: Biblical Allusions
James, G.P.R. James (17991860) was a prolific and popular nineteenth-century British novelist. As Freeman pointed out, Melville probably meant to quote William James, the author

Allusions
This page tracks several lines of allusion including the historical, biblical, and mythical that Melville employs both frequently and effectively. When appropriate, the allusions are grouped so that the reader can better see the connections upon which the effectiveness of the allusion largely depends. Also, there is no separate category for "literary" allusions those that refer to specific authors or works; by their very nature, all of Melville's allusions are "literary." Before some sections I have included a headnote briefly commenting on the general terms of Melville's allusive structure. Finally, to return to the chapter simply click the "Back" button on your browser or click on the chapter numbers at the end of each entry. You may also you these chapter numbers to see other places where Melville uses the same or similar allusions. Adamastor, "Camoëns' Spirit of the Cape" : Adamastor is a character from the epic poem the Lusiads (published 1570) of Portuguese poet Luiz Vaz de Camoes (1524-1580). The work recalls the glories of the Portuguese over the enemies of Christianity and particularly focuses on the triumphs of the great explorer, Vasco da Gama. In casting da Gama's voyages as mythological journeys, Adamastor emerges as the giant of classical literature who threatens (but fails) to destroy da Gama's fleet as they return by the Cape of Good Hope.

BY ARTHUR STEDMAN. Herman Melville was born in New York on August 1,1819, and received his early education in that city. There he imbibed his first love of adventure, listening, as be says in 'Redburn,' while his father 'of winter evenings, by the well-remembered sea-coal fire in old Greenwich Street, used to tell my brother and me of the monstrous waves at sea, mountain high, of the masts bending like twigs, and all about Havre and Liverpool.' The death of his father in reduced circumstances necessitated the removal of his mother and the family of eight brothers and sisters to the village of Lansingburg, on the Hudson River. There Herman remained until 1835, when he attended the Albany Classical School for some months. Dr. Charles E. West, the well-known Brooklyn educator, was then in charge of the school, and remembers the lad's deftness in English composition, and his struggles with mathematics. The following year was passed at Pittsfield, Mass., where he engaged in work on his uncle's farm, long known as the 'Van Schaack place.' This uncle was Thomas Melville, president of the Berkshire Agricultural Society, and a successful gentleman farmer.

Finished!

Scruton, Roger. "A Carnivore's Credo." Harper's . May 2006, p. 21-26.
I read this: The real force of the vegetarian argument stems, I believe, from a revulsion at the vicious [meaning "of vice", as opposed, I think, to "pious"] carnivore: the meat eater as he has evolved in the solipsistic fast-food culture, with the removal of food from its central place in domesticated life and the winning of friends. [. . .] Reduce meat to an object of solitary greed like chocolate and the question naturally arises: why should life be sacrificed just for this (26)? And then this: I would suggest that it is not only permissible for those who care about animals to eat meat; they have a duty to do so. If meat eating [sic? no hyphen, there, strangely enough] should ever become confined to those who do not care about animal suffering, then compassionate farming would cease. Where there are conscientious carnivores, there is a motive to raise animals kindly. Moreover, conscientious carnivores show their depraved contemporaries that there is a right and a wrong way to eat (26). Buy it? I might. Lately I've been thinking that eating animals raised on farms (as opposed to in factories, but even still...) is much like eating corn raised on farms. One is eating what has been bred and cultivated for eating. Just as we don't eat vegetables that are come across in "the wilderness" as part of nature's bounty, we don't eat wild animals (well, hunters do, which of course is a whole 'nother blog entry).
