Outside of a Dog: Kate Nepveu's Book Log
Sunday, May 28, 2006 I'd read Jerome K. Jerome's Three Men in a Boat text at Project Gutenberg ) some time ago; I have a hazy memory of a lazy weekend morning at one of Chad's apartments, possibly the one in New Haven. If anything, my memory of where I read it was sharper than of what I read; before getting the audiobook out of the library, I couldn't tell you a thing about it except that it was about a boat trip with three young men and a dog (who I didn't fully realize was a dog until chapter 2). Martin Jarvis does a very nice job of reading this, but I can't recommend it as a keep-awake audiobook: Three Men in a Boat isn't so much a narrative as an excuse for anecdote. A sentence will be spoken, or a place will be seen, and then one of the characters (most likely the narrator) will be reminded of something they did once, or something that happened to a friend, or a historical event that happened there . . . This is all very amusing in a Britishly deadpan way, but not what you'd call gripping: As an example of how utterly oblivious a pair of towers can be to their work, George told us, later on in the evening, when we were discussing the subject after supper, of a very curious instance.

I run a small hotel in Greece with my family and now we are building a new more up to date one. This book helped me to understand the hotel industry as a whole and the way it is changing. It covers with detail many issues, from GDS to bed making. There are hundrends of examples that make it easy to understand what is being discused. It is abstract at the beginning of every chapter and becomes more practical (how to do things) further on. Although the books draws most cases and examples from big properties, I found it very helpful and discovered many ways to improve the service we offer in our small hotel.

Jerome was the fourth child of Jerome Clapp (who later renamed himself Jerome Clapp Jerome), an ironmonger and lay preacher who dabbled in architecture, and Marguerite Jones. He had two sisters, Paulina and Blandina, and one brother, Milton, who died at an early age. Jerome was registered, like his father's amended name, as Jerome Clapp Jerome, and the Klapka appears to be a later variation (after the exiled Hungarian general György Klapka ). Owing to bad investments in the local mining industry, the family suffered poverty, and debt collectors often visited, an experience Jerome described vividly in his autobiography

"This story," commenced MacShaugnassy, "comes from Furtwangen, a small town in the Black Forest. There lived there a very wonderful old fellow named Nicholaus Geibel. His business was the making of mechanical toys, at which work he had acquired an almost European reputation. He made rabbits that would emerge from the heart of a cabbage, flop their ears, smooth their whiskers, and disappear again; cats that would wash their faces, and mew so naturally that dogs would mistake them for real cats and fly at them; dolls with phonographs concealed within them, that would raise their hats and say, 'Good morning; how do you do?' and some that would even sing a song.
"But, he was something more than a mere mechanic; he was an artist. His work was with him a hobby, almost a passion. His shop was filled with all manner of strange things that never would, or could, be sold things he had made for the pure love of making them. He had contrived a mechanical donkey that would trot for two hours by means of stored electricity, and trot, too, much faster than the live article, and with less need for exertion on the part of the driver, a bird that would shoot up into the air, fly round and round in a circle, and drop to earth at the exact spot from where it started; a skeleton that, supported by an upright iron bar, would dance a hornpipe, a life-size lady doll that could play the fiddle, and a gentleman with a hollow inside who could smoke a pipe and drink more lager beer than any three average German students put together, which is saying much.

Jerome K. Jerome (1859-1927) best known for his comic masterpiece Three Men in a Boat. Jerome Klapka Jerome was born 2 May 1859 in Belsize House, Bradford Street, Walsall, Staffordshire, in the heart of England. He was the fourth child of Jerome Clapp Jerome, (18071872) a well-respected nonconformist lay preacher and architect who died when Jerome was fourteen. Jerome's mother was Marguerite Jones, (d. 1872) daughter of a solicitor. Jerome's middle name was in honour of a family friend, Hungarian exile and hero George Klapka. Jerome had two sisters, Paulina Deodata and Blandina Dominica, and a brother Milton Melancthon. Jerome's childhood was very difficult as his parents were falling into financial ruin and it left its mark on him. His father had a streak of bad luck with an unsuccessful attempt at mining speculation, then in investment of an ironmongers and then coal mining. Early on Jerome wanted to become a Member of Parliament, but that was not to be. He attended the Philological School, later known as the Marylebone Grammar School. In 1872 his mother died and he was on his own. He started work at the London and North Western Railway. He had a number of occupations then including journalism and school teaching, and a number of disappointments with the rejections of many short stories and satires he wrote. His experience as an actor led to his novel
