Jewett's family had been residents of New England for many generations. Her father was a doctor, and Jewett often accompanied him on his rounds, becoming acquainted with the sights and sounds of her native land and its people. As treatment for rheumatoid arthritis , a condition that developed in early childhood, Jewett was sent on frequent walks and through them also developed a love of nature. In later life, Jewett often visited Boston, where she was acquainted with many of the most influential literary figures of her day; but she always returned to South Berwick, the inspiration for the towns of "Deephaven" and "Dunnet Landing" in her stories.

    Jewett, Sarah Orne
(b . Sept. 3, 1849, South Berwick, Maine, U.S.d. June 24, 1909, South Berwick), U.S. writer of regional fiction. The daughter of a successful doctor, she was mainly educated at home because of her delicate health. Early in her teens Jewett determined to write about the rapidly disappearing traditions of provincial life about her, and by the age of 28 she was an established writer. Outstanding among her 20 volumes are Deephaven (1877) and The Country of the Pointed Firs (1896), the latter often regarded as her finest achievement. These books contain realistic sketches of aging Maine natives, whose manners, idioms, and pithiness she recorded with pungency and humour, sympathetically but without sentimentality. In 1901 she became the first woman to receive an honorary degree from Bowdoin College. A disabling accident virtually ended her writing career in 1902. by Jessica Amanda Salmonson
"The Foreigner," one of Sarah Orne Jewett's finest short stories, today recognized as an important adjunct to the American classic The Country of the Pointed Firs, remained uncollected for over sixty years. It languished in the August, 1900 issue of The Atlantic Monthly until David Bonnell Green included it in The World of Dunnet Landing Pointed Firs, besides its inclusion in Professor Bendixen's Haunted Women in 1985. This story, so long in obscurity, is today admitted into the ranks of Jewett's most important stories. Inasmuch as the story is connected to Sarah's classic Firs, for which the majority of associated tales were already gathered, by Willa Cather, as early as 1919, the prejudice against supernatural literature, which Sarah experienced during her career, would seem indeed to be at the heart of that one story's long neglect. Her several other weird tales, lacking that special connection with so important a work as Firs

Jewett, Sarah Orne (1849-1909) page: Sarah Orne Jewett is a major figure in the literature of female romantic friendship, the precursor of modern lesbian literature. For the most part, fortune was kind to Jewett. Born on September 3, 1849, into a prosperous and stable family in South Berwick, Maine, she was the second of three daughters of Theodore H. Jewett, a country physician, and Caroline F. Perry. Sponsor Message. sr_adspace_id = 3294807; sr_adspace_width = 300; sr_adspace_height = 250; sr_adspace_type = "graphic"; sr_ad_new_window = true; She adored her father, who guided her through the family's large library and frequently allowed her to accompany him on his rounds throughout the coastal countryside because ill health made regular attendance at school difficult for her. In the course of these rambles, Jewett acquired the habits of empathy and observation that would serve her so well as a writer of sketches and narratives of New England village life.
