Jewett, Sarah Orne (1849-1909) page: Jewett died in 1909 of a cerebral hemorrhage, and with her, it seems, died the imaginative possibilities of that premodern, relatively less sex-conscious world. Though Cather took her advice and left journalism, even dedicating her breakthrough novel of 1913, O Pioneers! , to Jewett's memory, she wrestled throughout her career with the problem of representing desire in a culture that by then regarded intimacy between women as "unnatural." Jewett was a crucial precursor and role model, but the feelings she explores in stories like "Martha's Lady" (1897), in which the protagonist harbors a love for another woman that is "half a pain and half a golden joy," signified something different to the readers of Cather's generation. William's Wedding
I.
T HE hurry of life in a large town, the constant putting aside of preference to yield to a most unsatisfactory activity, began to vex me, and one day I took the train, and only left it for the eastward-bound boat. Carlyle says somewhere that the only happiness a man ought to ask for is happiness enough to get his work done; and against this the complexity and futile ingenuity of social life seem a conspiracy. But the first salt wind from the east, the first sight of a lighthouse set boldly on its outer rock, the flash of a gull, the waiting procession of seaward-bound firs on an island, made me feel solid and definite again, instead of a poor, incoherent being. Life was resumed, and anxious living blew away as if it had not been. I could not breathe deep enough or long enough. It was a return to happiness.

Domestic Goddess Sarah Orne Jewett was born to an old New England family, replete with the types of characters that appear in her stories sea captains, independent women, and country doctors. Jewett's early life was very much like the one she sketches in her novel A Country Doctor; Jewett and Nan Prince share the characteristics of an independent childhood followed by an unconventional womanhood. (For more on Nan Prince, click here ). Jewett was raised with tons of books in and around her home; she was virtually fed on words. It seems only natural that she should be drawn to write. Her mother was Caroline Frances and her father was Theodore Herman Jewett (23). On Sept 3, 1902, both Sarah was in a serious a carriage wreck when their horse slipped on a loose rock and stumbled. This accident effectively ended Jewett's writing career. Both Sarah and her sister Rebecca were thrown from the carriage, but while Rebecca was relatively unhurt, Sarah suffered a concussion and some damage to the neck. Speculation is that perhaps she had a cracked vertebra, but it was never officially diagnosed. She had pain, dizzy spells, memory loss and lost the ability to concentrate for the seven years until she died, of unrelated causes (349-362). Jewett's work has often been criticized as nothing more than "sketches," with very little plot and therefore, not worthy of much critical study. Jewett herself realized this about her work, writing to her editor
