The park contains the 2,000-seat Woodminster Amphitheater and Cascade, an outdoor theater regularly used to stage both amateur and professional musicals and plays. For many years the Oakland Recreation Department put on popular productions of musical comedies there, three per summer, using mostly amateur performers. Starting in 1967, production of the summer musicals was taken over by the current management. The Amphitheater with its "water feature" (the Cascade, which still has flowing water) was designed by Howard Gilkey, who also designed the now-dry Cleveland Cascade at Lake Merritt ; it was built in 1941 and dedicated to California writers.

His parents were Hulen (sometimes “Hulings”) Miller and Margaret Witt who married January 3, 1836 in Union County Indiana . Most family researchers give his birth date as September 8, 1837 and his birthplace as Liberty, Union County, Indiana. The Miller family was probably of German extraction, and may have attended the Four Mile German Baptist, or Dunkard, Church in Union County, IN, where people named Miller, Witt, Fahl, and Petry (family names) were founding members. While a young boy, the Miller family moved to Oregon and settled in the Willamette Valley , establishing a farm in what would become Lane County . Accounts differ, giving the family’s move to Oregon as early as 1842, but it was probably between 1850 and 1852. Miller's exploits included a variety of occupations, including mining-camp cook (who came down with

Joaquin Miller was born Cincinnatus Hiner Miller on a farm near Liberty, Ind., on Sept. 8, 1837. His parents set out for the West in 1852 and settled in the Willamette Valley, Ore. Within 2 years their restless son left for the California gold mines. For a time Miller lived with northern California Indians near Mt. Shasta. He was implicated in the massacre of the Pit River Indians, attended college briefly, and operated a pony-express service between the Idaho mines and the West Coast. In 1862 Miller became editor of the Democratic Register in Eugene, Ore. Before the year was over he had married and had founded a new paper, the Eugene City Review. Later Miller settled in a mining camp in Canyon City, Ore. He practiced law, worked a claim of his own, fought Indian harassment, and was elected judge of Grant County in 1866 for a 4-year term. In 1869 the Millers were divorced. For the next 10 years Miller pursued a literary career. His first book of verse was

Did Oregon's first true laureates, Joaquin Miller, "the Poet of the Sierras," and Samuel Leonidas Simpson, "Oregon's sweetest singer," ever meet? It seems doubtful. If they didn't, it seems too bad. They had a lot in common. Both were lawyers, although neither practiced much law. Miller would hang out his shingle in Oro Fino, Idaho, but have to turn to pony express. A few years later in Canyon City, another gold rush town, he was elected judge. Sorting out truth from fiction in Miller's life is like perhaps unraveling a horse-hair lariat and weaving it back together blindfolded. Will that rope hold when you lasso the mustang? One of the most celebrated literary figures of the 19th century, Joaquin taught Buffalo Bill how to dress! Poet and critic William Everson [Brother Antoninus] hails Miller as the inceptor of the western literary archetype. When he began publishing in Oregon, he couldn't write for sour owl manure. He's still a mediocre poet whose reputation has spiraled downward, to the bottom of the canon. Why do some of us love him? He's a cosmic character and the consumate showman...the splendid poseur who wrote authentic, noble and beautiful tales of our American West. Some of these stories he really lived. Alan Rosenus of Urion Press republished The Selected Writings of Joaquin Miller. The best evoke Oregon: "In the Land of Clouds" (Mt. Hood), "An Old Oregonian in the Snow" (Did Miller observe Joe Meek facing off the Californians? It's believable.). "Bill Cross and His Pet Bear," set in the Willamette Valley, is one of the True Bear Stories (1900), a fun collection from Capra Press.

Situated in the Oakland Hills, Joaquin Miller Park contains one of the only Urban Second Growth Redwood Groves in existence. Since the Save the Redwoods League donated the Redwood Grove to the city of Oakland in 1928, it has been extensively used by a multitude of user groups including: Scouts, picnickers, hikers, motorcyclists, day campers, bird watchers, naturalists, bicyclists, dog-walkers and joggers. Still, despite being held hostage by its geographical location right at the edge of an urban area that now includes over six million people, the park retains much of its natural beauty, health, vitality, and majesty. Unfortunately a recent proposal to ban bikes from the park has rekindled the age-old dispute over equal access. Take a photo tour of the park, learn more about the challenges that all Open Spaces face, and commit yourselves to helping alleviate stresses on this magnificent recreational resource. Joaquin Miller, The Poet of the Sierras
Joaquin Miller Called the "Poet of the Sierras" and the "Byron of the Rockies," Cincinnatus Hiner Miller alias Joaquin Miller was also termed a "poseur" and a "farce" during his careers as a 19th century lawyer, judge, pony express rider, newspaperman, teacher, cook, miner, conservationist and poet. Taking poetic license to heart, Miller was inventive about every aspect of his life including his name, age, and where he was born. However, 25 years after his death, his secret "California Diary" was unearthed, revealing that many of his unusual experiences were products of his lively imagination. Fellow litterateur, Ambrose Bierce, called him "The greatest liar this country has ever produced." Miller, though, always explained: "I'm not a liar. I simply exaggerate the truth." Claiming to be born in "a covered wagon pointed west," Miller was actually born near Liberty, Indiana in September 1837. He was named after the city of Cincinnati and not the Roman statesman. His middle name, which he often changed to Heine to gain a "poetic association" with the famed German poet, came from the doctor who delivered him. And from his early thirties on, he was always five years younger than his real age, a chronological change he made to improve both his poetic and sex image.
