  • while, at the same time, writing that seems unfamiliar with these male-dictated formal structures can likewise be condemned as unpolished, unlearned, and amateur. Consider, then, the additional importance of this line of inquiry in the case of Lady Mary Wroth. Scholars of Wroth's works generally agree that one of her greatest attributes is her ability to evocatively appropriate forms, twisting them to her own rhetorical purposes, and thereby asserting herself as a well-versed author while, at the same time, subverting (or even completely co-opting) formal elements. Most of these critics understandably focus their discussions of Wroth's formal influences almost entirely on her Sidney family background. I would like to expand this discussion by exploring more closely Wroth's connections to Ben Jonson and the possibilities the connections offer regarding both the form and content of Wroth's sonnet sequence Pamphilia to Amphilanthus , a correlation with noteworthy potential as an addition to the ongoing critical debate over the structure of Wroth's sonnet sequence.
  • 88. Richard Brome
    A biography of the Jacobean dramatist and servant of Ben Jonson.

    RICHARD BROME
    This article was originally published in Encyclopedia Britannica, Eleventh Edition, Volume IV . Anonymous. Cambridge: University Press, 1910. p. 631-2.
    BROME, RICHARD (d. 1652), English dramatist, was originally a servant of Ben Jonson , and owed much to his master. The development of his plots, the strongly marked characters and the amount of curious information to be found in his work, all show Jonson's influence. The relation of master and servant developed in to friendship, and our knowledge of Brome's personal character is chiefly drawn from Ben Jonson's lines to him, prefixed to The Northern Lasse (1632), the play which made Brome's reputation. Brome's genius lay entirely in comedy. He has left fifteen pieces. Five New Playes (ed. by Alex. Brome, 1652?) contained Madd Couple Well Matcht (acted 1639?); Novella (acted 1632); Court Beggar (acted 1632); City Witt The Damoiselle or the New Ordinary Five New Playes (1659) included The English Moor, or The Mock Marriage; The Love-Sick Court, or The Ambitious Politique; Covent Garden Weeded; The New Academy, or The New Exchange ; and The Queen and Concubine The Antipodes (acted 1638, pr. 1640);

    2007-06-02 - 1:56 a.m. De senaste inläggen, senaste åren, har allt kretsat kringa mamma. Så mycket att jag själv kan spy på det. Men det går inte att komma ifrån att det just nu är maj och den 25:e dog hon ju. För fem år sedan. Och det är helt sjukt hur fort tiden går.
    Vad jag lärt mig med åren, inte bara med mammas bortgång utan även med mor- och farföräldrars och nära vänners bortgång, är att år inte läker.. men åren lär en att leva med sorgen. Den blir liksom en del av en. Lika stor som förut men lättare att bära.
    Men visst, bara syrénen i sig får det att värka i hjärtat. Även om jag kan tycka att maj blivit lättare att leva med. Vi åker på semester nu. Jag och Sanne och alla barnen. Ska bli så fruktansvärt skönt. Jag känner mig utarbetad och less. Samtidigt tycker jag det mesta med mitt arbete är spännande. Det är jobbarkompisarna jag stör mig på. Vi är en liten klick som inte är ”tanter”. Fikat kan vara rena döden på min arbetsplats. Jag brukar roa mig ibland med att ropa något och hoppa eller slå ut med armarna när jag kommer in i fikarummet. Vad som helst som får vem som helst att rycka till, om ens bara så lite, lite... Jag SMS:ade till Rosa, mina jobbarkompis, att jag skulle tänka på henne när jag sitter under ett parasoll på stranden. Hon sa hon skulle göra desamma, vid den ”trevliga” fikarasten. Jo då, vi är några allierade.

    THE ROSE RE-OPENS AFTER 395 YEARS
    - Latest Stage in a Campaign to Rescue Remains of World Famous Elizabethan Theatre - The site of the Rose Theatre, the first Elizabethan theatre on London's Bankside where Shakespeare learned his craft, where he had his first plays performed and where he probably acted, is to be opened to the public in early April 1999 (exact date still to be confirmed). The Rose was also the venue for the plays of Shakespeare's famous contemporary, Christopher Marlowe. A sound and light show , by the acclaimed theatre designer William Dudley, will tell the history of the Rose, and of Bankside. It marks the first stage of a massive fundraising campaign by the Rose Theatre Trust (RTT) to rescue the archaeological remains of the theatre from eventual decay and to secure them for future generations by carrying out a full-scale excavation. The discovery of the theatre site in 1989 was greeted by a blaze of publicity. Its remains are of huge archaeological and cultural importance but have sadly been hidden for conservation reasons below a protective crust of sand and concrete and a pool of water for nearly 10 years. Now at last work has begun to present the site to the public.
