His works give an important insight into first-century Judaism , describing, for example, the beliefs of some of the main schools, including the Pharisees Sadducees and the Essenes . Josephus works were some of the most widely read among European scholars. He is also a significant source of information on the period between the two testaments, that is, on the Maccabean revolt , on the Hasmoneans and on the rise of Herod the Great While some accuse him of being a pro-Roman propagandist , even a traitor to his nation (for surrendering rather than committing suicide and then cooperating with the Roman aggressors) Josephus nonetheless did much to help to rehabilitate Jews in Roman eyes after the disastrous rebellion of 70 C.E.

His father Matthias belonged to a respected family of priests in Jerusalem. Josephus reports proudly that at the age of sixteen he went through the three "philosophical schools "of the Jews, those of the Pharisees, Sadducees, and Essenes, and that for the next three years he lived with a hermit named Banus. At the age of nineteen he publicly joined the Pharisees ( Vita , i.-ii.). In 64 A.D. he undertook a journey to Rome to obtain the release of certain imprisoned priests. He had hardly returned to Palestine when the great insurrection against the Romans broke out (66 A.D. A.D. ) and Domitian (81-96 A.D. ), Josephus enjoyed the same favor. It is not known how long he lived and in what relation he stood to the later emperors. He must have been living in the time of Trajan, since in his Vita he mentions King Agrippa II. as having already died (100

When 16 years old he resorted to one Banus, an ESSENES, (which see), in the desert of Engedi, with whom he remained for 3 years, absorbing occult lore, and practicing the ascetic life. It might have been expected from his social position that, on his return to Jerusalem, he would join the SADDUCEES (which see); but, his Essene experience having indoctrinated him with ceremonialism, he preferred to become a Pharisee (see PHARISEES 2. • Josephus Flavius (in Hebrew יוסף בן מתתיהו) (c. 37-100 AD) was a Jewish historian and soldier, born in Jerusalem. Survived and recorded the Destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD by the Romans. Josephus' historical works are an important source for the study of early Judaism (immediate post-Temple period) and early Christianity. Among others Josephus offers information about Pontius Pilate, John the Baptist, James the brother of Jesus, and a disputed reference to Jesus Life Josephus, who introduced himself in Greek as "Iosepos, son of Matthias, an ethnic Hebrew, a priest from Jerusalem" (Jewish War I.3), fought the Romans in the First Jewish-Roman War of 66-73 as a Jewish military leader in Galilee. After the Jewish garrison of Yodfat was taken under siege, the Romans invaded, killed thousands, and the remaining survivors who had managed to elude the forces committed suicide. However, in circumstances that are somewhat unclear, Josephus and one of his soldiers surrendered to the Roman forces invading Galilee in July 67. He became a prisoner and provided the Romans with intelligence on the ongoing revolt. The Roman forces were led by Flavius Vespasian and his son Titus, both subsequently Roman emperors. In 69, Josephus was released and according to Josephus's own account, he appears to have played some role as a negotiator with the defenders in the Siege of Jerusalem in 70.
