    Dubliners
    Written: Mar 03 '00 (Updated Jun 09 '01)
Product Rating: Pros: A good descriptive account of Dublin in the early 1900's
Cons: Joyce is in his journalistic phase, the best is yet to come.
The Bottom Line: The introduction to Joyce's illustrious literary career. In reading this first book, the reader will see the tremendous growth in his writing style from literal to associative.
Stloraine's Full Review: Joyce James Dubliners, Recorded Books, unabridged version, 9.5 hours, 7 cassettes, narrated by Donal Donnelly. James Joyce first attempted to publish Dubliners in 1912, but the publisher changed his mind, citing impropriety. It was published successfully in 1914, the same year in which Ulysses was born. Joyce first conceived of Ulysses as a short story for inclusion in Dubliners, but changed his mind and eventually wrote it as an extraordinary twenty-four hour excursion through Dublin. Joyce's literary development is just beginning. Until the final story in the book there is nothing to portend the poetic word creativity that culminates in Ulysses.

    49. In The Brothel Of Modernism Picasso And Joyce
Essay by Robert Scholes, arguing that the brothel was a prime theatrical space for male modernists.

In the Brothel of Modernism: Picasso and Joyce
    by Robert Scholes
    Part 1
Hey what! You here, dear fellow! You, in a house of ill fame? You, the drinker of quintessences! You, the ambrosia eater? Really, this takes me by surprise.
    (Charles Baudelaire, "Loss of Halo,"
But it is precisely modernity that is always quoting primeval history. This happens through the ambiguity attending the social relationships and products of this epoch. Ambiguity is the pictorial image of dialectics, the law of dialectics seen at a standstill. This standstill is utopia and the dialectical image therefore a dream image. Such an image is presented by the pure commodity: as fetish. Such an image are the arcades, which are both house and stars. Such an image is the prostitute, who is saleswoman and wares in one.
    (Walter Benjamin, Reflections
A few months after Picasso was born, in February of 1882, a boy was born in Dublin, Ireland who was destined to share with Picasso a central position in modernism. Christened James Augustine Joyce, he was exceptionally gifted as a writer, as precocious with words as Picasso was with visual forms. He, too, was drawn to Paris, arriving there first in the same year as Picasso but not settling there until after the first World War. He did not become rich, but he did become a figure as dominant in modern letters as Picasso was in visual art, whose relelentless formal innovations kept the rest of the literary world panting helplessly behind him. It is a curious fact that these two men, born in Catholic countries far from the centers of culture and power in modern Europe, came to live in Paris, the city that Walter Benjamin called "The Capitol of the Nineteenth Century," and helped to make it the capitol of modernism as well.

Zürich, Switzerland James Augustine Aloysius Joyce (Irish name Séamas Seoighe ; February 2, 1882 – January 13, 1941) was an Irish writer and poet, regarded as one of the seminal figures of modernism . Comparable to Pablo Picasso in visual arts and Igor Stravinsky in music, Joyce revolutionized the novel as an artistic medium to explore the complexities and psychological dissonance of modern life. His experimental use of language and frank exploration of consciousness in such works as Ulysses (1922) and Finnegan's Wake (1939), although greeted with rejection from publishers, suppression by censors , and incomprehension by readers, influenced twentieth-century literature perhaps more than any other novelist's works. Joyce pushed the limits of the "stream-of-consciousness" technique pioneered by writers such as Fyodor Dostoevsky and Knut Hamsun , erasing any vestige of the conventional narrative voice. The unfiltered access to a character's thought processes, presented as mere phenomena, was a milestone in the advance of
