John Keats
John Keats was born in London, the son of a livery stable manager and the eldest of four children. After his father's death when John was nine, the family moved to his maternal grandmother's home in Edmonton where his mother died in 1810. Keats was educated at Clarke's school in Enfield where he excelled in sports and classics. Following his mother's death, however, he had to leave and became apprenticed to a surgeon-apothecary at Enfield. Encouraged to continue his literary studies by his older friend the son of his former headmaster, Charles Bowden Clarke, he began to write poetry whilst continuing his profession in which qualified as an apothecary in 1816, abandoning it in favour of poetry soon afterwards. Keats' short life was marred by many personal tragedies: the suffering and death of close relatives, unrequited love, jealous attacks by rivals on his art, and his own poor health. The pain and anguish caused by these is a source of inspiration for him, however, and the genius of his later works combines passion and stoicism with classical scholarship and vivid imagery. He died of tuberculosis in Rome at the age of twenty-five on a trip to repair his health. On first looking into Chapman's Homer

    John Keats?¢ (born in London on October 31, 1795) difficult childhood included the loss of both parents?¢his father in a riding accident and his mother from tuberculosis?¢within six years of the other when Keats was eight and fourteen. John and his brother George were sent to boarding school at Enfield, a village ten miles north of the city. At age fourteen and a half, he took an apprenticeship with an apothecary.
    After five years of apprenticeship, John Keats enrolled as a student in Guys Hospital in London. Keats started to write and on May 1st, 1816, one of his earliest surviving poems, ?¢To Solitude?¢?? was published in The Examiner, a weekly liberal newspaper. After one year at Guys Hospital, he passed an apothecary examination, but he never pursued a career in medicine, having decided to become a poet,
    In 1817, he published his first volume Poems, but the book barely sold. Encouraged by his brothers and the publisher of Poems, Keats journeyed to the Isle of Wight, to have the solitude needed for writing. However, the solitude of the isle did not encourage his endeavors and he soon left, feeling like a failure. Despite this setback, he continued writing. The year 1817 marked a period of extraordinary growth for the poet, who wrote and published Endymion?¢though it was highly criticized by conservatives.

    Joseph Severn's miniature of Keats, 1819 John Keats
    English Romantic poet John Keats was born on October 31, 1795, in London. The oldest of four children, he lost both his parents at a young age. His father, a livery-stable keeper, died when Keats was eight; his mother died of tuberculosis six years later. After his mother's death, Keats's maternal grandmother appointed two London merchants, Richard Abbey and John Rowland Sandell, as guardians. Abbey, a prosperous tea broker, assumed the bulk of this responsibility, while Sandell played only a minor role. When Keats was fifteen, Abbey withdrew him from the Clarke School, Enfield, to apprentice with an apothecary-surgeon and study medicine in a London hospital. In 1816 Keats became a licensed apothecary, but he never practiced his profession, deciding instead to write poetry.

    John Keats (1795-1821) , renowned poet of the English Romantic Movement, wrote some of the greatest English language poems including "La Belle Dame Sans Merci", "Ode To A Nightingale", and "Ode On a Grecian Urn"; O Attic shape! Fair attitude! with brede
    Of marble men and maidens overwrought,
    With forest branches and the trodden weed;
    Thou, silent form, dost tease us out of thought As doth eternity: Cold pastoral! When old age shall this generation waste, Thou shalt remain, in midst of other woe Than ours, a friend to man, to whom thou sayst, "Beauty is truth, truth beauty,that is all Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know." John Keats was born on 31 October 1795 in Moorgate, London, England, the first child born to Frances Jennings (b.1775-d.1810) and Thomas Keats (d.1804), an employee of a livery stable. He had three siblings: George (1797-1841), Thomas (1799-1818), and Frances Mary "Fanny" (1803-1889). After leaving school in Enfield, Keats went on to apprentice with Dr. Hammond, a surgeon in Edmonton. After his father died in a riding accident, and his mother died of tuberculosis, John and his brothers moved to Hampstead. It was here that Keats met Charles Armitage Brown (1787-1842) who would become a great friend. Remembering his first meeting with him, Brown writes

    Keats started work on Hyperion in September 1818. An essential part of its purpose was to describe the growth of the Greek god Apollo into a true poet through ever deeper acceptance and understanding of change and sorrow. But Keats was unable to get ahead with it for a number of reasons, including impaired health, negative reception of Endymion by an influential critic, and the death of his brother, Tom.

    Piazza di Spagna 26, 00187 Rome Welcome to the website of the Keats-Shelley House, Rome. Situated
    on the Spanish Steps, the House was the final home of John Keats,
    who died here in 1821, aged just 25. The exterior of the House is exactly as it was when Keats travelled to Rome to spend the last few months of his life in a vain attempt to stave
    off the inevitable effects of consumption. The House, which opened to
    the public in 1909, now contains an extensive collection of paintings, sculpture, manuscripts, relics and first editions which celebrate the lives
    of Keats, Percy Bysshe Shelley and Lord Byron. Other highlights of our collection include a reliquary containing locks of John Milton and Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s hair, Byron’s wax carnival mask and manuscripts by Oscar Wilde, Mary Shelley, William Wordsworth, and Keats’s friend and travelling companion Joseph Severn. The House contains one of the finest libraries of Romantic literature in the world; now numbering more than 8,000 volumes more titles are added yearly. Many thousands of people visit the House every year in tribute to Keats's genius, and that of Shelley, to whom the House is also dedicated.
