SUMMARY SUMMARY Helen Keller had absolutely no hearing or eyesight from the age of two, but became one of the most inspiring and well known people to have ever lived. For a number of years she functioned, in her words, simply as "an unconscious clod of earth." Then quite suddenly, she experienced the impact of "another mind" within her own. Helen Keller
The First Lady of Courage by Rit Nosotro First Published:: 2003
In Tuscumbia, Alabama on June 27, 1880 Captain Arthur H. and Kate Adams Keller had a beautiful baby girl named Helen Adams Keller. Tragedy struck when little Helen was 5 months shy of her second birthday. She was overcome by a terrible illness that left her blind and deaf. Helen's doctors told her parents it was a "brain fever." However, modern doctors and researchers still are not sure whether it was meningitis, scarlet fever, or a severe bout of encephalitis. Although quite intelligent, due to the fact that Helen could neither speak nor hear she had developmental difficulties. Communication was nearly impossible. By the time Helen was seven, she was so unmanageable that her family had just about given up hope. On February 3, 1887, Helen's father wrote a letter to Alexander Graham Bell, who eleven years earlier had also the invented the telephone, thanking the inventor for taking an interest in his little girl. By May of 1888 Helen's family and Bell were exchanging many letters. Alexander advised Mrs. Keller to write the Perkins School for the Blind, an establishment Mrs. Keller recognized from the Dickens' novel 'American Notes'. Michael Anagnos, the director of Perkins School sent a young graduate of the institute to live with them. Her name was Anne Sullivan.

Helen becomes deaf and blind
Helen Adams Keller was born in Tuscumbia, Alabama, on June 27, 1880. Her parents were Captain Arthur H. Keller and Katherine Adams Keller. Her father was a veteran of the confederate army (army that fought to separate from the United States during the Civil War, which lasted from 1861 to 1865). He also was the editor of the local newspaper, the North Alabamian. Helen was born a normal child. She started speaking when she was six months old. By the time she was a year old, she was able to communicate with her parents and she had also learned to walk. When Helen was eighteen months old an illness developed that the doctor described as brain congestion. She ran a high fever for many days, and then the fever was gone. Helen was left deaf and blind from the illness. Helen became a very wild, unruly child. She would scream and kick when she was angry and giggle and laugh when happy. She developed many of her own signals to communicate her needs with her parents.
Her early learning
Schools and education
Helen wanted to learn to speak, and in 1890 she began taking speech classes at the Horace Mann School for the Deaf in Boston. She worked diligently at learning to speak. After twenty-five years of hard work and practice, Helen was able to speak in a voice that others could understand.

KELLER, Helen Typed Letter Signed 1902. September 22 [1902]. Written to Mr. [William V.] Alexander, editor of Ladies Home Journal , who had requested a series of articles from Keller that were later published as The Story of My Life . Keller humbly thanks Alexander for payment for the last article; in part: "I only wish I could have made the story of my life more worthy of the generous praise it has received...It has meant a great deal in my life, and in Miss Sullivan's too the thought of the happiness that she says my compliance with your request has brought her is sweeter even than the thought of the kindness shown me in the letters that come constantly from old friends long silent and new friends whose words go to the heart..." Two 5" x 8" pages, typed with blue ribbon and signed "Helen Keller ." A very early letter by Keller, preceding her first book, with exceptionally good content. Fine. All books are first printings of first editions or first American editions unless otherwise noted. See more items by KELLER, Helen
