41. Three Kings
Haro rates the movie not bad.
http://haro-online.com/movies/three_kings.html
View other movie reviews Find a movie: Three Kings Three Kings initially seems to be a marked departure from director and co-writer David Russell's previous films, the independent Spanking the Monkey and Flirting With Disaster . Upon closer inspection, it is much more than a typical war film, and perhaps a little closer to his previous films. What begins as a quest by American soldiers to loot stolen Kuwaiti gold becomes a more serious, personal quest to save lives. Three Kings also manages to have some pretty strong statements against the Bush administration's policy against refugees in Iraq at the end of the Gulf War. Sgt. Troy Barlow (Mark Wahlberg, Boogie Nights, The Corrupter ) is an army reservist, a new father, and a soldier in Iraq that never saw any combat. All of the troops with him are restless, edgy, and bored. Most of the Iraqi troops they encounter promptly surrender. Barlow finds a map hidden in an odd place on one of these soldiers. Rumors swirl that the map leads to a cache of gold stolen by Saddam Hussein. Together, with Chief (Ice Cube, The Player's Club

43. Reflections On "The Man Who Would Be King".
Discussion of characters and themes in the film.
http://www.stuartfernie.org/king.htm
Companion site at http://www.stuartfernie.com Welcome to my page of reflections on "The Man Who Would Be King". Based on a short story by Rudyard Kipling, adapted and filmed by John Huston in 1975, "The Man Who Would Be King" is a rousing and thought-provoking tale set in India during the time of the British Empire. Huston lovingly produced a work which is remarkably faithful to the original, and indeed clarifies and enhances it with material not included in the original but which is entirely in keeping with the spirit of both the characters and the themes. In roles originally intended for Clark Gable and Humphrey Bogart, Sean Connery and Michael Caine positively dominate the screen as they recount the tale of Daniel Dravot and Peachey Carnehan, two soldiers of fortune who set out to become Kings of Kafiristan. This is the story of two charming and immensely likeable rogues who are not afraid to make their mark on the world. They are untroubled by any existential considerations, and are quite amoral yet courageous and, in their own way, principled. They are self-centred and determined adventurers who recognise no man-made authority and have little thought for those whose lives they touch, but they are not evil and intend no real harm. They are a pair - they complement one another perfectly, with Peachey being the practical, intelligent, cunning schemer, while Danny is magnetic, "spiritual", and provides strength and thought for our duo. Together, they represent a whole, and divided, each is weakened.

45. The Scorpion King
Review of the film by Haro.
http://www.haro-online.com/movies/scorpion_king.html
View other movie reviews Find a movie: The Scorpion King The Scorpion King is the prequel to The Mummy Returns , which was the sequel to The Mumm y . However, The Scorpion King is not really a prequel to The Mummy , since the characters in it were not in the original. Confused? Don't think to hard, or it will cause a headache. And don't think too hard when watching The Scorpion King , or it will cause a stroke. This film is Universal's attempt at prolonging The Mummy franchise (and starting a new one at the same time) and establishing wrestling star The Rock (aka Dwayne Johnson) as a bona fide action hero. It succeeds on both counts, but that doesn't mean its a good thing. Part of the reason why The Mummy movies worked so well was that it was a fun action movie, almost a throwback to old serials. The movies were violent but not too violent, and didn't take themselves too seriously. The Scorpion King raises both the violence and the self-deprecation, and the latter brings down the movie.

All-Reviews.com Movie/Video Review King Kong
out of 4 Starring: Fay Wray, Bruce Cabot Director: Merian Cooper Rated: NR RunTime: 105 Minutes Release Date: April Genres: Classic Horror Sci-Fi/Fantasy Buy this DVD ... Half.com *Also starring: Robert Armstrong, Frank Reicher, Sam Hardy, Noble Johnson, James Flavin Review by Brian Koller From the first few minutes, it is obvious that "King Kong" is not a great movie. The script isn't good enough, full of cliches and one-dimensional characters. Fortunately, the film is partly redeemed by the special effects and action scenes. "King Kong" is a historically important and entertaining film, but not particularly good. Carl Denham (Robert Armstrong) is a gregarious huckster and film producer/director/cameraman who specializes in jungle spectaculars. He needs a blonde for a love interest angle, for dramatic purposes finding her (Fay Wray) at the last possible moment. Wray is so hungry that she has resorted to stealing apples, yet she looks terrific. Armstrong hires her without any knowledge of her character, experience, or acting ability. Clumsy phrases such as "square", "straight" and "on the level" are used as code words to indicate that Armstrong will not try to seduce Wray.

Come see costars get clobbered while the main characters defy gravity and all physics in Peter Jackson’s rendition epic of King Kong ! Why, they survive a stampede and avalanche of not one, not two, but a bunch of brontosaurii, not to mention a swarm of freakishly giant lampreys and insects! Naomi Watts as breathless doe-caught-in-headlights Ann Darrow even lets giant centipede antennae probe her tonsils in some gross post-production humor, not hentai. Witness Colin Hanks turn into a young Dan Aykroyd! Watch Adrien Brody as the bravely stupid (or is that stupidly brave?) Jack Driscoll, the playwright turned screenwriter who wins Ann’s human heart (before she meets the gargantuan gorilla) and repeatedly rescues her. And why not? Humans are so keen on themselves that only they would make a movie depicting themselves in the highest regard. Carl Denham ( Jack Black Well, please do because someone has to repay these special effects artists for doing a magnificent job, from the ferocious fight scenes right down to the fuzzy down of King Kong’s fur sitting poetically in the sunset. (And it could just be a yen for foreshadowing, but I swear the background bridge support trusses formed repetitive K’s). Peter Jackson invited Andy Serkis (previously LotR ’s Gollum) to emote and mime out the jumbo primate, which is perfection. There’s a playful, juvenile yet maternal Koko-esque quality to the Kong; you’ll love it when he hams it up with ex-Vaudeville Ann and when he discovers ice skating for the first time. But don’t forget to bring tissues because Jackson wants to give

Review of the film by Haro.
http://www.haro-online.com/movies/king_arthur.html
View other movie reviews Find a movie: King Arthur The filmmakers behind the latest version of the King Arthur legend claim that theirs is the most historically accurate. In actuality, there is virtually no way of knowing who is correct and who is not, but one thing is for certain: this version strips away much of what made Arthur and his knights such an enduring legend. Gone is the magic of Merlin and Excalibur. The Round Table is barely there and most of the knights do not have enough time to establish personalities. The love triangle between Arthur, Guinevere, and Lancelot never develops. Mallory, Tennyson, and White must all be rolling in their graves. King Arthur takes place a few hundred years before most of the conventional Arthurian myths do. If anything, it feels like more of an attempt to make a huge summer blockbuster than anything else. Shades of Gladiator and Braveheart constantly peek out, but overall, King Arthur just feels silly. Britain is still in the hands of Rome, and Arthur (Clive Owen

Over the next few weeks, though Guinevere is destined to pad down with Arthur, she does cast a few glances toward Lancelot, but one wonders what she sees in him or any of the other knights since nobody, not even the female warrior, is blessed with the slightest character development. When Arthur ultimately decides that he's no longer fighting for Rome but for a higher cause, we strain our ears to hear that, like our president today, his higher cause is freedom–to the cheers of the unwashed in the background. Huh? Freedom from what? Not even the alleged slavery is given any exploration, so we're about as in the dark about Arthur's motive as we are about Mr. Bush's. All in all, a forgettable epic drowned out by music and, speaking of drowning, there is a nifty scene that will remind biblical scholars of the parting of the Red Sea.

    STORY PREFACE
When Rome left its province of Britannia for good in 410 A.D. , after more than three centuries of rule, the native population had little protection against intruders. Thirty years later (or so), looking for help outside their own boundaries, native Britons (a Celtic people from Angulus (the Angles) and Germans from Saxony (the Saxons) to work as mercenaries. Their pay? Briton land. Had those early Britons envisioned what could happen when mercenaries (invited or not) reached their shores, perhaps they would have looked elsewhere (or nowhere) for help. One thing is certain: Requests for Anglo-Saxon help ultimately led to unwelcome invasions which forever changed Britannia and her people. Author: Carole D. Bos, J.D. View other movie reviews Find a movie: King of Masks The King of Masks is an elderly Chinese street performer with no family. In his show, he switches the masks he wears so quickly that it appears to be magic to his audience. To add some context, many people know that boys are the preferred children in China. Today, the view is changing, but earlier in the century, it was much worse. Parents would go as far as selling their little girls away so that they could try to have a boy. When a famous actor approaches the King of Masks, he is very excited. The actor wants the King to join his acting troupe, on the condition that the King teaches him the secrets of switching masks. The King refuses, saying that he can only teach his art to an heir. This encounter troubles the King, since he has no heir. His only possessions are a small barge and a monkey that performs with him. The King of Masks begins to search for a baby boy to buy, but all he finds are parents selling girls. Finally, he finds a small boy, and buys him. He is happier now, with a 'son' and someone he can teach his art to. When he finds out the boy is actually a little girl, he is outraged. He doesn't want a girl. A girl is worthless. This is evident in his condescending name for her, "Doggie." Director Wu Tianming ( To Live Mongoose rates it: Not bad 1 hour, 41 minutes, Mandarin with English subtitles, Not rated, fine for almost everyone.
