Kingsley, Henry.
Henry Kingsley, English writer, brother of Charles Kingsleyhe of "Westward Ho!"was born at Barnack, Northamptonshire, January 2, 1830. He was educated at King's College and Oxford. After three years at the latter, he left without a degree for Australia in 1853 and remained there until 1858, suffering considerable privation among the early gold seekers. On his return to England he became a contributor to Macmillan's Magazine, and in 1859 published his first novel, "The Recollections of Geoffrey Hamlin," which was based largely upon his own experiences in Australia. In 1864 he married his cousin, Sarah Haselwood, and they removed to Wargrave, Berkshire, and in 1869 to Edinburgh, where he became editor of the Daily Review. In 1870 he was its war correspondent and was present at Sedan when Napoleon surrendered. He left the paper in 1871 but continued writing novels until his death on May 26, 1876, from cancer of the throat. REFERENCES: Allibone

Charles Kingsley the elder, Mary, née Lucas. Charles Kingsley came of a long line of clergymen and soldiers, and in addition to the two well-known novelists, the family included Dr. George Kingsley the traveller and writer, and a daughter who also wrote fiction. Henry Kingsley's boyhood was spent at Clovelly and Chelsea , before attending King's College School King's College London , and Worcester College Oxford , which he left without graduating. An opportune legacy from a relation enabled him to leave Oxford free of debt and emigrate to Australia , arriving at Melbourne in the Gauntlet in December 1853. He became involved in gold-digging, and later joined the mounted police For some time Kingsley had little or no money and carried his swag from station to station. Mr Philip Russell stated in 1887 that he employed Kingsley at his station Langa-Willi, and that Geoffrey Hamlyn was begun there. Miss Rose Browne, the daughter of "

Cripps considers data relating to three topics in this article: Carroll's knowledge of and interest in Kingsley and his works; Carroll's friendship with Henry Kingsley; and the parallels between The Water-Babies and Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. With respect to the parallels, Cripps cautions about talking of influences, declaring that it is quite likely that two authors, themselves the product of similar backgrounds, should sometimes use the same ideas when composing a children's story. Carroll, Lewis The Water-Babies Kingsley, Henry
Lord, Walter Frewen. The Kingsleys, in his The Mirror of the Century (London: John Lane, The Bodley Head, 1906): 188-203.

Lord discusses the life and work of the two brothers Henry and Charles Kingsley, focusing on their novels. As regards the work of Charles Kingsley, we shall have to say that over-emphasis destroyed the artistic effect that he would fain have produced. A not dissimilar lack of finish is perceptible in the work of Henry Kingsley, owing to his eagerness to produce. A little more mental concentration in the case of both; a little more deliberation in the case of Charles, and a little more earnestness in the case of Henry, and the world of letters would have been enriched by two great artists. Henry Kingsley
Home Library Miscellaneous Biographies Henry Kingsley (1830-1876), the younger brother of famed novelist Charles Kingsley, showed signs of brilliance in his early works, but the majority of the twenty novels he published were either panned or simply ignored. "The Recollections of Geoffrey Hamlyn" (1859) received considerable attention in Australia, and critics concur that his best work is "Ravenshoe" (1862). Following a brief period of marginal fame in the early 1860s, the remainder of Kingsley's life was marked by literary failure and poverty. Fun and Folly Henry Kingsley was born on January 2, 1830, at Barnack in the Northamptonshire countryside of England. The youngest child, he was the fifth son born to Reverend Charles and Mary (Lucas) Kingsley. Two of his brothers achieved significant fame during their life times, Charles as a novelist and George as a traveler and scientist. Soon after Kingsley 's birth, before his first birthday, the family moved to Clovelly, Devonshire. When Kingsley was six years old, his father became the rector at St. Luke's Church in Chelsea. Both Devonshire and Chelsea later figured prominently into Kingsley's novels. Most of his childhood was spent in London, where he investigated his literary interests in his father's well-stocked library and local bookstalls.
