    Kipling, Rudyard
Rudyard Kipling¢s popularity has endured several pronounced swings. As a young man he established himself as one of the most respected poets of his day, and was the youngest recipient of the Nobel Prize for Literature at the age of 42 in 1907. His poems and stories remained popular for many years, but as he grew older his reputation steadily declined, largely because of his outspoken imperialism and what was perceived as cultural insensitivity and racism in his writing. However, interest in his work was eventually rekindled and in modern times he has once again secured a place in literary history, though perhaps more for his children¢s books for than for his poetry or short stories.
Born in Bombay, India in 1865, Kipling was sent to England to be educated when he was six and spent an unhappy childhood at the hands of an abusive caregiver. He was able to leave her house for boarding school when he was 12. In 1881 he returned to India, where his parents still lived, and found work as a newspaper editor and reporter. He soon enjoyed some success in selling his poetry and short stories; By the time he returned to England in 1889, he had built up a name for himself as a writer.
In 1892, Kipling married Caroline Balestier and the couple relocated to Brattleboro, Vermont, where Kipling¢s wife owned property. He published some of his best work during these years, including the poems "Gunga Din" (1892), "If" (1895) and the children¢s story

    Kipling's Childhood
Kipling was born in Bombay, India. His father was John Lockwood Kipling, a teacher at the local Jeejeebhoy School of Art, and his mother was Alice Macdonald. They are said to have met at Rudyard Lake in Staffordshire, England, hence Kipling's name. His mother's sister was married to the artist Edward Burne-Jones, and young Kipling and his sister spent much time with the Burne-Joneses in England from the ages of six to twelve, while his parents remained in India. Kipling was a cousin of the three-times prime minister Stanley Baldwin.
After a spell at boarding school, Kipling returned to India himself, to Lahore (in modern-day Pakistan) where his parents now were, in 1881. He began working as a newspaper editor for a local edition and continued tentative steps into the world of poetry; his first professional sales were in 1883.
    His Early Travels
By the mid-1880s he was travelling around the subcontinent as a correspondent for the Allahabad Pioneer. His fiction sales also began to bloom, and he published six short books of short stories in 1888. One short story dating from this time is "The Man Who Would Be a King", later made famous as a slightly differently named movie featuring Sean Connery and Michael Caine.

Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) , prolific English poet and author wrote The Jungle Book “The bushes rustled a little in the thicket, and Father Wolf dropped with his haunches under him, ready for his leap. Then, if you had been watching, you would have seen the most wonderful thing in the world—the wolf checked in mid-spring. He made his bound before he saw what it was he was jumping at, and then he tried to stop himself. The result was that he shot up straight into the air for four or five feet, landing almost where he left ground. “Man!” he snapped. “A man’s cub. Look!” Kipling enjoyed early success with his poems but soon became known as a masterful short story writer for his portrayals of the people, history, and culture of his times. In his essay titled “Rudyard Kipling” George Orwell called him “the prophet of British Imperialism in its expansionist phase.”

    Biographical note
Joseph Rudyard Kipling (30 December 1865 – 18 January 1936) was an English author and poet. Born in Bombay, British India (now Mumbai), he is best known for his works of fiction The Jungle Book [1894] (a collection of stories which includes Rikki-Tikki-Tavi), Kim [1901] (a tale of adventure), many short stories, including The Man Who Would Be King [1888]; and his poems, including Mandalay [1890], Gunga Din [1890], and If— [1910]. He is regarded as a major "innovator in the art of the short story"; his children's books are enduring classics of children's literature; and his best works speak to a versatile and luminous narrative gift. Kipling was one of the most popular writers in English, in both prose and verse, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The author Henry James said of him: "Kipling strikes me personally as the most complete man of genius (as distinct from fine intelligence) that I have ever known." In 1907, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, making him the first English language writer to receive the prize, and to date he remains its youngest recipient. Among other honours, he was sounded out for the British Poet Laureateship and on several occasions for a knighthood, all of which he declined. Later in life Kipling came to be recognized (by George Orwell, at least) as a "prophet of British imperialism." Many saw prejudice and militarism in his works, and the resulting controversy about him continued for much of the 20th century. According to critic Douglas Kerr: "He is still an author who can inspire passionate disagreement and his place in literary and cultural history is far from settled. But as the age of the European empires recedes, he is recognized as an incomparable, if controversial, interpreter of how empire was experienced. That, and an increasing recognition of his extraordinary narrative gifts, make him a force to be reckoned with."

    Biography
British writer born in India; a poet, novelist and journalist who, more than anyone, captured the spirit of British Rule in India. Kipling first worked as a journalist on the Allahabad Pioneer in India, later moving to England. Some of his most famous works are "The Jungle Book," 1894, "Captains Courageous," 1897, and an autobiography, "Something of Myself," which was published posthumously in 1937. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1907, the first English-language writer to have that honor. When Rudyard was born, his father, John Lockwood Kipling, was serving as principle of the Jeejeebyhoy Art School in Bombay, India. His mother, Alice Macdonald Kipling, had three sisters who had married well. Among his uncles were Sir Edward Burne-Jones and Sir Edward Poynter, both famous painters, and Alfred Baldwin, a future Prime Minister. Family connections were very important in his early life, and the years before he turned six were reportedly idyllic. In 1871, however, the Kipling family returned to England, and things changed drastically. His parents stayed in England for only six months, and when they returned to India, they left young Rudyard and his three-year-old sister with a foster family, the Holloways of Southsea. Over the next five years, he was bullied and physically mistreated, and as a result, he was left with a sense of betrayal and deep psychological wounds.
