Kipling, Kim, and Anthropology
This page last revised 18 May 1998 All quotations from Rudyard Kipling's Kim , Ware: Wordsworth Editions Ltd, 1993. Imagining India . Oxford: Blackwell, 1990.p20). Rudyard Kipling's Kim exemplifies this in a variety of ways. Kim reveals a genuine love and sympathy for India but remains a jingoistic product of its time and place. Benita Parry points out that the history of Kipling criticism mirrors the history of attitudes to the imperial encounter itself ( Delusions And Discoveries: Studies on India in the British Imagination Just as the museum curator patronised the lama, Kim itself has been viewed as a realistic representation of India. It acts as another example of how colonial powers judge themselves best qualified to represent the colonised nation to itself and others. Kipling's vision of "happy Asiatic disorder"(p56) on the Grand Trunk Road has often been read as indicative of the 'real' India instead of a nostalgic evocation of a much loved childhood. Blurring distinctions between caste and class, Kipling also manages to blur distinctions between the colonisers and the colonised. In many respects Kim has tended to function as an anthropological text as it cultivated popular opinion of India and the colonial experience. While the modern reader can recognise the ideology behind Kipling's reductive maxims it is important to appreciate the links between rational sciences and the core project of imperialism.

Kipling, Rudyard Biography
Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) "O thirty million English that babble of England's might,
Behold there are twenty heroes who lack their food to-night;
Our children's children are lisping to "honor the charge they made - "
And we leave to the streets and the workhouse the charge of the Light Brigade!"

(from 'The Last of the Light Brigade', 1891) Rudyard Kipling was born in Bombay, India, where his father, John Lockwood Kipling, was an arts and crafts teacher at the Jeejeebhoy School of Art. His mother, the former Alice Macdonald, was a sister-in-law of the painter Edward Burne-Jones. India was at that time ruled by the British. Ruddy, as Kipling was affectionally called, was brought up by an ayah , who taught him Hidustani as his first language. Oh, East is East, and West is West, and never the twain shall meet,
Till Earth and Sky stand presently at God's great Judgment Seat;
But there is neither East nor West, Border, nor Breed, nor Birth,
When two strong men stand face to face, tho' they come from the ends of the earth!

    The Battle of Jutland (Kipling)
    The Battle of Jutland was described by Rudyard Kipling in his series of reports in the London Daily Telegraph , October 19, 23, 26, 31,1916, passim.
    Note that Kipling, for reasons of security, used fictitious names for the destroyers. When the German fleet ran for home, on the night of May 31, it seems to have scattered "starred " I believe, is the word for the evolution in a general sauve qui peut , while the Devil, lively represented by our destroyers, took the hindmost. Our flotillas were strung out far and wide on this job. One man compared it to hounds hunting half a hundred separate foxes. I take the adventures of several couples of destroyers who, on the night of May 31, were nosing along somewhere towards the Schleswig-Holstein coast, ready to chop any Hun stuff coming back to earth by that particular road. The leader of one line was Gehenna , and the next two ships astern of her were Eblis and Shaitan , in the order given.... Towards midnight our destroyers were overtaken by several three- and four-funnel German ships (cruisers, they thought) hurrying home. At this stage of the game anybody might have been anybody pursuer or pursued. The Germans took no chances, but switched on their searchlights and opened fire on Gehenna . Her Acting Sublieutenant reports: "A salvo hit us forward. I opened fire with the afterguns. A shell then struck us in a steampipe, and I could see nothing but steam. But both starboard torpedoes were fired."

    any of Peter Bellamy's most ardent fans got confused when he began to spend so much time on settings of the works of Rudyard Kipling. Much of this confusion was based on a failure to understand the part played by Kipling, not only in English culture, but also in Peter's own life. And it was also a bad relic of the left's role as creator and, to a certain extent, as pilot of the directions of the folk revival. Surely, it was felt, this bad old apologist for imperialism had nothing in common with the humanistic aspirations of the revival. Well, actually, he did, though it was hard to see it at the time.This was 1970, remember, and Harold Macmillan's "wind of change" had been sweeping through Africa for ten years. India had obtained its independence in 1947 (though the vestiges of British "divide and rule" remained in the partition which is a source of conflict on the sub-continent to this day) and Kipling's world seemed a sad vestige of a bygone age when Peter's Oak Ash and Thorn challenged all our comfortable preconceptions. We could ignore the savagery of poems like
