Weblog

Running head: CLASSROOM CMC October 14, 1994 or email: DRLANE@Aardvark.ucs.uoknor.edu ABSTRACT The purpose of this paper is to supplement the round table discussion regarding the use of computer-mediated communication in the classroom. Computer-mediated communication is defined, current research is presented and pragmatic issues of computer-mediated communication in the classroom are addressed. Benefits and disadvantages of the new technology are discussed and participants are encouraged to share perspectives and insights regarding the implications for extending the boundaries of the classroom through computer-mediated communication. Computer-Mediated Communication in the Classroom: Asset or Liability?
What is Computer-Mediated Communication? Computer-mediated communication (CMC) has been defined as "synchronous or asynchronous electronic mail and computer conferencing, by which senders encode in text messages that are relayed from senders' computers to receivers (Walther, 1992, p. 52). CMC has also been described as "any communication patterns mediated through the computer" (Metz, 1992, p. 3). Walther and Burgoon (1992) argue that, "for many of us, CMC is no longer a novelty but a communication channel through which much of our business and social interaction takes place, and this transformation is expected to continue" (p. 51). They note, "CMC produces much different affective and relational patterns than do other types of communication, due to the reduction and types of cues available to participants" (p. 51).

Introduction and General Resources
The Information Superhighway can be thought of as a global network of smaller interconnected computer networks and associated software technologies. Effective use of the Information Superhighway requires utilization of various computer software technologies. The six main technologies are electronic mail (e-mail), telnet, ftp, newsgroups, Gopher and World Wide Web (Web). They have been developed during the 1980's and 1990's in the order listed above. The software associated with the Web has been available for approximately the last 2 years, and this software attempts to integrate the five technologies into one easy-to-use package. The objective of this paper is to describe these six technologies. Examples of sites for dairy-related information are provided, along with the detailed contact information. Sources for more information on some technologies are provided, as is information on commercial computer hosts that provide access to the Information Superhighway and its technologies1. To get a copy of an up-dated list of Internet hosts, send an e-mail message to listserv@umdd.umd.edu, and put the following line in the body of the message: GET HOST TXT.

Krol retired in April after 29 years at the UI. "People would always ask, ‘Well, what are you going to do when you retire?’ " said Ed Krol, former assistant director of Campus Information Technologies and Educational Services (CITES). "And I didn’t have anything to do. So, finally, I sort of thought, ‘Well, I really like France.’ " So less than 24 hours after his April 30 retirement, Ed Krol and his wife, Margaret, were aboard a plane to Paris. After a five-day stay, Margaret, who is assistant vice president of Administrative Information Technology Services, returned to the states, and Ed headed for the shores of the Mediterranean for a leisurely week in Corsica.

LESSON 2: HISTORY OF THE NET
"Trends, like horses, are easier to ride in the direction they are going ..." Anonymous Although frequently called the "information superhighway," the Internet is actually a precursor to the multi-network that will some day provide universal access to digital communication services around the globe. It has been likened to a highway system because it functions much like a network of interstate highways. In reality, the Internet is a "network of networks," connecting a growing number of regional sites to an intercontinental electronic grid that today encompasses, according to 1996 statistics from the Matrix Information and Services (MIDS) , 13.4 million individual servers in more than 100 countries around the world. In the (January 1997), Robin Murphy, of InterNIC Information and Education Services, reports that "over 80,000 new domain names were registered by InterNIC and Network Solutions, Inc. each month by the last quarter of 1996." The Internet came about as a logical extension of the massive highway building campaign which took place during the 1950's when the cold war was at its height. In the name of national defense, the government underwrote the cost of constructing a system of interstate highways linking major cities across the country, and thereby allowing the military to quickly reinforce any front in case the United States was ever attacked.

This document assumes that one is familiar with the workings of a non-connected simple IP network (e.g. a few 4.2 BSD systems on an Ethernet not connected to anywhere else). Appendix A contains remedial information to get one to this point. Its purpose is to get that person, familiar with a simple net, versed in the "oral tradition" of the Internet to the point that that net can be connected to the Internet with little danger to either. It is not a tutorial, it consists of pointers to other places, literature, and hints which are not normally documented. Since the Internet is a dynamic environment, changes to this document will be made regularly. The author welcomes comments and suggestions. This is especially true of terms for the glossary (definitions are not necessary).
In the beginning there was the ARPAnet, a wide area experimental network connecting hosts and terminal servers together. Procedures were set up to regulate the allocation of addresses and to create voluntary standards for the network. As local area networks became more pervasive, many hosts became gateways to local networks. A network layer to allow the interoperation of these networks was developed and called IP (Internet Protocol). Over time other groups created long haul IP based networks (NASA, NSF, states...). These nets, too, interoperate because of IP. The collection of all of these interoperating networks is the Internet.
