Marie-Madeleine Pioche de La Vergne Lafayette
Home Library French Literature Companion Lafayette, Marie-Madeleine Pioche de La Vergne, comtesse de or Marie-Madeleine Pioche de La Vergne La Fayette comtesse de (1634-93). No author influenced early prose fiction more decisively than this woman who entered the literary scene as a young précieuse during the golden age of the salons [see preciosity ]. Her first published work was a verbal portrait of her lifelong closest friend, Sévigné . She went on to write a series of historical novels that permanently altered the novel's shape ( La Princesse de Montpensier Zayde La Princesse de Clèves La Comtesse de Tende , published 1724). Her contributions to the history of her age, Histoire de Madame Henriette d'Angleterre and Mémoires de la Cour de France pour les années 1688 et 1689 , were published posthumously (1720, 1731).
