CHARLES LAMB
The Old Familiar Faces
I HAVE had playmates, I have had companions,
All, all are gone, the old familiar faces. I have been laughing, I have been carousing,
All, all are gone, the old familiar faces. I loved a Love once, fairest among women:
All, all are gone, the old familiar faces. I have a friend, a kinder friend has no man:
Like an ingrate, I left my friend abruptly;
Left him, to muse on the old familiar faces. Ghost-like I paced round the haunts of my childhood,
Seeking to find the old familiar faces. Friend of my bosom, thou more than a brother,
How some they have died, and some they have left me,
All, all are gone, the old familiar faces.
Hester
WHEN maidens such as Hester die
Their place ye may not well supply,
Though ye among a thousand try With vain endeavour. A month or more hath she been dead, Yet cannot I by force be led To think upon the wormy bed And her together. A springy motion in her gait, A rising step, did indicate Of pride and joy no common rate

Lamb, Charles
British, 1775–1834
Charles Lamb worked as a clerk for a mercantile firm from the age of 17 until he retired at 50. A writer by avocation, he published poetry, a novel, two plays, critical essays, stories for children (with his sister Mary), and familiar essays. His critical essays earned respect, and Tales from Shakespeare (1807), a collection of plot sketches for children, remains popular. The familiar essays, however, are the works on which his literary reputation rests. These essays began to appear in 1820, most of them in the London Magazine. Lamb later collected them in three volumes: two series of Elia (1823, 1828) and The Last Essays of Elia (1833). Selections were regularly anthologized for more than a century after Lamb’s death, and the collection continues to receive critical attention.
Here broad burlesque extends beyond its initial success and transforms itself gradually into finer humor. The series of quips, each topping the one before, recalls the playfulness of the talk that Lamb so enjoyed at social gatherings. This passage also presents fanciful material as if it were true, mocking Lamb’s own antiquarian bent by treating the “manuscript” with scholarly respect.

LAMB, CHARLES (1775-1834). Essayist and poet, was b. in London, his f. being confidential clerk to Samuel Salt, one of the benchers of the Inner Temple. After being at a school in the neighbourhood, he was sent by the influence of Mr. Salt to Christ's Hospital, where he remained from 1782-89, and where he formed a lifelong friendship with Coleridge. He was then for a year or two in the South Sea House, where his elder brother John was a clerk. Thence he was in 1792 transferred to the India House, where he remained until 1825, when he retired with a pension of two-thirds of his salary. Mr. Salt d. in 1792, and the family, consisting of the f. , mother, Charles, and his sister Mary, ten years his senior, lived together in somewhat straitened circumstances. John, comparatively well off, leaving them pretty much to their own resources. In 1796 the tragedy of L.'s life occurred. His sister Mary, in a sudden fit of insanity, killed her mother with a table-knife. Thenceforward, giving up a marriage to which he was looking forward, he devoted himself to the care of his unfortunate sister, who became, except when separated from him by periods of aberration, his lifelong and affectionate companionthe "Cousin Bridget" of his essays. His first literary appearance was a contribution of four sonnets to Coleridge's Poems on Various Subjects (1796). Two years later he

Jump to: navigation search Previous (Charles Kingsley) Next (Charles Le Brun) Charles Lamb Charles Lamb (February 10, 1775 –- December 27, 1834) was an English poet, fiction writer, literary critic, and essayist of the English Romantic period. A close contemporary and personal friend of Samuel Taylor Coleridge and William Wordsworth , Charles Lamb was considered a critical member of the Lake Poets, but unlike Wordsworth and Coleridge his poetry never achieved lasting fame. Eventually, Lamb redirected his energies away from verse to prose, and in the process he became one of the most valuable and enduring essayists of the Romantic period. As an essayist, Lamb is best known for two collections: The first, Essays of Elia consists of a series of deeply autobiographical memoirs and essays written from the pseudonymous perspective of "Elia" and originally published as a serial for London Magazine Essays of Elia are acclaimed as some of the finest early examples of the essay form in English, as well as exemplary masterpieces of English prose. The second work, Tales from Shakespeare On the whole, Lamb, while a minor poet of the Romantic period, is one of its most invaluable authors. His essays read like the finest journalism, and provide readers with a panoramic view of the life and literary currents of one of the most dramatic periods in English literary history.

Lamb, Charles
(b. Feb. 10, 1775, London, Eng.d. Dec. 27, 1834, Edmonton, Middlesex), English essayist and critic, best-known for his series of miscellaneous " Essays of Elia," but also among the greatest of English letter writers, and a perceptive literary critic. Lamb's father, a scrivener, acted as confidential clerk to Samuel Salt, a bencher of London's Inner Temple. The boy read avidly among Salt's books, and at the age of seven he went to school at Christ's Hospital, where he studied until 1789. He was a near contemporary there of Samuel Taylor Coleridge , with whom he began what was to be a lifelong friendship, and of Leigh Hunt. He was a good scholar and, but for a stutter, would probably have proceeded to holy orders. Instead, he left school just before the age of 15 and in 1792 found employment as a clerk at India House, remaining there until retirement in 1825. In 1796 Lamb's sister, Mary , in a fit of madness (which was to prove recurrent) killed their mother. Lamb reacted with courage and loyalty, taking on himself the burden of looking after Mary, and being rewarded by her affectionate devotion. Lamb's first appearances in print were as a poet, with contributions to collections by Coleridge (1796) and by Charles Lloyd (1798).
