The Storm of War by Andrew Roberts
Andrew Roberts's global analysis of the Second World War is masterful, says Robert Service Adolf Hitler in Paris in 1940. Photograph by Roger-Viollet / Rex Features The following correction was printed in the Observer's For the record column, Sunday 16 August 2009 Below we said that after France had fallen in 1940, "the United Kingdom fought on alone against Germany and Japan", but the UK did not declare war on Japan until December 1941 after its attack on Pearl Harbour brought the US into the war. It is a safe bet that at any given moment there is someone in the United Kingdom writing a general history of the Second World War. Andrew Roberts's latest offering is a sparkling addition to the groaning shelves. The British have almost a monopoly in the subject. Go into any bookshop in Italy and there are always plenty of publications about the fighting in the Apennines. In Warsaw, the same is true of the Soviet massacre of Polish troops in the Katyn forest. Russian military historians produce an annual stream of books on the battles of Stalingrad and Kursk. American authors write endlessly about FDR, Patton and even Churchill. But it is in this country that most accounts have appeared about the war as a global phenomenon from September 1939 right through to the Japanese surrender in August 1945.

Paperback: $19.99 Amazon
Hardcover: $26.99 Amazon The Power of the WaFT…
Humanity’s salvation, or so they thought… In the twenty-second century, humanity had become the master of its domain. The WaFT provided for every material need and powered whole cities from a single station. Governments had slowly grown redundant as corporations took up the mantle of resource management. At the center of the new prosperity was the Sorensen Conglomerate, lavishly spread out beneath its great shield dome on the planet Mars. Under Sorensen’s leadership, it seemed Utopia was at hand— for those who could afford it. But there was a darker side to the new gilded age—though the company saw to its workers’ needs, it expected nothing less than absolute submission from them. Minimalism for the throngs of laborers in the subterranean caverns contrasted with the grandeur afforded the bourgeoisie elite in their soaring towers. For those few workers not lulled into submission, the disparity was a call to arms and stoked the fires of revolution. For Noah Sorensen, son of the richest man in the solar system, the escalating conflict would come into stark relief as he assumed his place in the family company and began to learn of worlds far different than he could imagine, right beneath his feet.

A fanfare for the common man
He was condemned as a misogynist and racist, but Philip Larkin's poetry reveals a world illuminated by unexpected lights. Andrew Motion on our continuing fascination with the Hermit of Hull The last big Larkin-fest was held in 1982, and coincided with his 60th birthday. Faber published a collection of friendly essays, the South Bank Show did a profile (in which the only signs of Larkin himself were his hands, pudgily turning the pages of a book), and newspapers ran appreciative features about him. Roy Hattersley struck the single sour note, in a half-hour TV special that raked over the same sort of "faults" that Al Alvarez had found in the poems 20 years earlier: excessive pessimism, predictable gloom, narrow horizons. Larkin made a decent fist of seeming to find the praise embarrassing, and genuinely disliked the Hattersley programme. "It gave me some idea of what being a writer in Russia must be like," he told his friend Judy Egerton, "arraigned in public for bourgeois formalism, counter-revolutionary determination and anti-working-class deviation. That great bloated unsmiling accuser and his silent audience was the most depressing thing I've had to endure for a long time."
