@import url(../index.css); Latimer, Hugh Aiton’s Encyclopedia Latimer, Hugh (1490-1555), an English reformer. He was educated at Cambridge and took part in the stirring times of the English Reformation. His experience illustrates well the intolerance of the times. First he narrowly escaped the vengeance of the Roman Church for preaching against its abuses; then he was thrown into prison for not coming out squarely for the new English Church; finally, in the reign of the Catholic Mary, he was bound to the stake and burned as a heretic. His sermons, two volumes of which are extant, now seem plain, witty talks to the people on practical reforms and earnest living.

He was educated in Cambridge, was made chaplain to Henry VIII in 1530 and during the ascendency of Anne Boleyn in 1535 he was appointed bishop of Worcester. In 1539 he resigned his bishopric, not being able to accept the Six Articles, and lived in privacy for six years. On coming to London, he was put in prison, but on the accession of Edward VI was released and became highly popular at court. This continued until Mary ascended the throne, when Latimer was cited to appear, along with Cranmer and Ridley, before a council at Oxford. He was condemned, and after much delay and a second trial, Latimer and Ridley were burned at the stake, Oct. 16, 1555.

HUGH LATIMER
Brief Biography Latimer, Hugh (1485-1555)
Born in Leicestershire and educated at Cambridge, Latimer was at first antagonistic to the Reformation in England. He was converted in his thinking under the influence of Thomas Bilney, one of the leaders of a group of reformed theologians who met for discussion at the well-known White Horse Tavern. Latimer quickly became one of the leading spokesmen for the Reformation. Latimer was chaplain to King Henry VIII and, in 1535, was made Bishop of Worcester. However, his reformed views led to charges of heresy, and he endured two brief imprisonments during times when Henry reacted against reform.
Latimer is best known as a powerful preacher, and he was a favouite preacher in the royal court under Edward VI. He placed great emphasis on the reading of Scripture and is thought to be the author of the homily "A Fruitful Exhortation to the Reading of Holy Scripture," in the First Book of Homilies.
Arrested during the persecution of Reformers under Queen Mary, Latimer, along with Nicholas Ridley, was burned at the stake, in Oxford, on October 16, 1555. As the fires were lit, Latimer cried out to his companion, "Be of good comfort, Master Ridley, and play the man. We shall this day light such a candle by God's grace in England as I trust shall never be put out!" Useful Links
