1. A History Of The World In 6 Glasses By Tom Standage
Certainly, the legendary biography of Lautzu is interesting, and the history of tea mingles with that of Taoism, but how and when are suspect.

To take one example, on the subject of tea:
"Exactly how and when it spread into China is unclear, but it seems to have been helped along by Buddhist monks ... Both Buddhist and Taoist monks found that drinking tea was an invaluable aid to meditation, since it enhanced concentration and banished fatigue-qualities that are now known to be due to the presence of caffeine. Lau-tzu, the founder of Taoism who lived in the sixth century BCE, believed that tea was an essential ingredient in the elixir of life." (p. 178) Lau-tzu's very existence as a historical personage is a hotly contested issue among scholars, and the

    Anxiety, Fear and Breathing
"The complex has its roots in the simple."  Lau-Tzu
It is one thing to be alerted to a threat but altogether another to over react with a fight, feel excessive fear, flee, freeze, fake it, fumble, or mumble.
Modern stressful living as well as past traumas have resulted in vast numbers of people over reacting and even imagining things that do not really exist as threats or stresses or exist at all. When the breathing is not allowed to stay in balance every reaction to life becomes distorted or negatively magnified. This breathing based distortion is what we call UDB.
Generally the first line of defense if to remove a negative stimulus. The caffeine you ingested is driving you up the wall? Stop drinking caffeinated beverages.  If there is snake in the area, remove the snake or leave the area.  If this is impractical, (your boss is the "snake" or he/she is just so exciting you just cannot sit still), you take life saving prescription drugs that make you nervous, you can try to reduce your anxious reaction(s) by the way you are breathing.  You can consciously slow your breathing down and reduce the anxiety level; at will.
This can be quite helpful but is often a temporary approach and your body may need more oxygen in the first place so slowing the breathing down may not be a good idea albeit a momentary quick fix and even life saving.  The long term best approach is to manage the immediate anxiety and then change/develop your breathing so that it automatically adjusts and you stay calm and do not get anxious in the first place. "Courage under fire" might be one way of looking at it but it is really more about relaxing, feeling safe inside and the way you breathe.

    THE FINANCIAL PHILOSOPHER
Lau Tzu: Beginning of 'The Way'
Lau Tzu or Laozi is a title, meaning "Old Master," given to Li Erg who was reportedly born around 600 BC and lived a long and good life as the royal court librarian and historian. While it is not known with certainty that Lau Tzu actually existed, legend has it that Lau Tzu's access to the information found in the royal archives supplied valuable knowledge. Apparently disgusted with society, Lau Tzu abruptly "retired" to live out the remainder of his days as a hermit away from people and closer to nature. Fortunately for the future of Taoism and eastern philosophy, Lau Tzu had to exit the Chinese emperor's territory and into his new home and co-existence with nature by way of the Han-ku pass. The keeper of the pass asked that Lau Tzu write a book telling all that he knew before leaving society. This book, Tao Te Ching , would become the foundation of Taoism. The Tao, translated as "the way," is not something that we humans can understand or describe in words but can best be reflected in Nature, which is the basis of much of taoist thought and philosophy. Lau Tzu associates the Tao with "non-being," or a non-resistant and passive existence, called "

Lao-Tzu (575 b.c.e.) Taoism is usually associated with Lau-Tzu, but some scholars trace the origin of Taoism to a Chinese philosopher named " Yang-Tzu ." Yang-Tzu's focus was on our inability as humans to have much of an effect on the world around usthis is deeply opposed to Confucius. Thus Yang-Tzu recommended becoming a recluse, disconnecting yourself from the world. Many of the early Taoists were, in fact, recluses. Yang-Tzu also felt that people don't value life itself as much as they couldthe everyday experience of lifeand instead they value things. We'll eventually see the way these early ideas contributed to the development of Taoism. The Taoism we see in Lau-Tzu certainly goes beyond the initial ideas of the early Taoists. Lau-Tzu the Person We actually know very little about Lau-Tzu the person. His name means "Old Master." Some accounts tell us that Lau-Tzu was an old man when Confucius was alive. Others tell us that he lived hundreds of years earlier, others hundreds of years later. One of the problems is that some historians date the Tao Te Ching (a book supposedly written by Lau-Tzu) to a period that does not quite correspond to when he was thought to be alive. It could be the case that Lau-Tzu wrote the book as some notes or ideas, then his students recorded the notes formally for him later. In fact, this interpretation fits with the traditional story we hear about the origin of the

    Lau-tzu: Beginning of 'The Way'
"If I have even just a little sense, I will walk on the main road and my only fear will be of straying from it." Lau-tzu (604BC - 531BC) In my view, philosophy begins with Lau-tzu... For that reason, he will be the first to be highlighted in a new series of TFP posts, categorized as "Focus on Philosophy." I've been contemplating the creation of something that focuses more on philosophy and less on finance something that can provide for a refreshing divergence from the onslaught of attention-consuming information sources already covering "the news." Of course, you will still receive the weekly "Weekend Wisdom" and the consistent sprinkling of narrative financial philosophy, but considering the state of our world and, specifically, the global financial markets, I believe now is as good of a time as any to sharpen our focus on philosophy... But in the year that I was there, they taught me that for a book to be considered holy scripture (or divinly inspired) it could not dispute any other part of what is already considered holy christian scripture. I believe the Tao Te Ching does not.

The tao that can be told
    is not the eternal Tao.
The name that can be named
is not the eternal Name. The unnamable is the eternally real.
    Naming is the origin
of all particular things. Free from desire, you realize the mystery. Caught in desire, you see only the manifestations. Yet mystery and manifestations arise from the same source. This source is called darkness. Darkness within darkness. The gateway to all understanding. When people see some things as beautiful, other things become ugly. When people see some things as good, other things become bad. Being and non-being create each other. Difficult and easy support each other. Long and short define each other. High and low depend on each other. Before and after follow each other. Therefore the Master acts without doing anything and teaches without saying anything. Things arise and she lets them come; things disappear and she lets them go. She has but doesn't possess

    Lao Tzu: Father of Taoism
Lao Tzu meets Yin Xi, the Guardian of the Gate of Tibet. Although ascetics and hermits such as Shen Tao (who advocated that one 'abandon knowledge and discard self') first wrote of the 'Tao' it is with the sixth century B.C. philosopher Lao Tzu (or 'Old Sage' born Li Erh) that the philosophy of Taoism really began. Some scholars believe was a slightly older contemporary of Confucius Kung-Fu Tzu , born Chiu Chung-Ni ). Other scholars feel that the Tao Te Ching, is really a compilation of paradoxical poems written by several Taoists using the pen-name, Lao Tzu. There is also a close association between Lao Tzu and the legendary Yellow Emperor, Huang-ti According to legend Lao Tzu was keeper of the archives at the imperial court. When he was eighty years old he set out for the western border of China, toward what is now Tibet, saddened and disillusioned that men were unwilling to follow the path to natural goodness. At the border (Hank Pass), a guard, Yin Xi (Yin Hsi), asked Lao Tsu to record his teachings before he left. He then composed in 5,000 characters the Tao Te Ching (The Way and Its Power). Confucius.
