Lawrence, Michigan
Photos courtesy of: K. Huisjen Lawrence is located in southern Van Buren County on the Red Arrow Highway, about eight miles west of Paw Paw. It is situated on the Paw Paw River and at the junction of County Roads 365, 215 and 673. It has a village form of government and its own school system. Its economic base is supported primarily by local small business, agriculture and some small to medium manufacturing. Lawrence was first settled in 1835 by John Allen, who named the town "Mason" after Michigan’s Governor, Steven T. Mason. Allen apparently did not register the land, however, and he was later foreclosed upon by a John Baker, who then owned most of the land in the village. Baker then renamed it Lawrence, after the Township, and officially registered the plat. It later was incorporated as a village in 1879. If you have comments or suggestions

    Lawrence, D.H.
    British, 1885–1930
D.H.Lawrence is one of the most important and prolific Modernist essayists. Lawrence wrote on an eclectic range of topics: aesthetics, botany, culture, education, literature, pornography, psychoanalysis, religion, sexuality, travel, and trousers. He even wrote an unconventional school textbook for Oxford University Press: Movements in European History (1921) was commissioned as a series of informal short essays, “vivid sketches of movements and people.” His numerous prefaces, introductions, and book reviews clearly demonstrate his critical and commercial versatility.
In England, Lawrence’s essay work appeared principally in the English Review and, later, the Adelphi magazine; in America, the Dial was his chief publishing outlet. The Dial’s editorial interest in primitive art and culture was particularly germane to Lawrence’s preoccupations. From 1912 Lawrence lived by his pen, and his feel for the popular journalistic market found expression in his essays for mass-circulation newspapers such as the Evening News and Sunday Dispatch. In these articles, the neglected side of Lawrence as an adaptable, professional wordsmith is evident.
In many ways, Lawrence’s career starts and finishes with the essay. His earliest completed prose work, “Art and the Individual” (1908), originally delivered as a discussion paper, and his last full-scale text Apocalypse (1931), a death-bed commentary on the symbology of the Book of Revelations, are indicative of Lawrence’s notorious tendency to preach. He adopted argumentative tactics as a distinctive stylistic means of redefining complacent literary forms. No area of Lawrence’s writing is without the stamp of essayism. His novels habitually halt in mid-narrative, delivering polemics on marriage, politics, or cultural malaise; his letters are frequently selfcontained essays or fragmentary drafts for essay projects; his later poetry is often direct commentary rather than traditional verse, indebted both to Pascal’s Pensées and Nietzsche’s use of the aphorism as guerrilla mini-essay.

Lawrence of Arabia is set during World War 1 when the British were trying to stop the Turks from gaining control of the Suez control. Lawrence ( Peter O'Toole ), a lowly British office on assignment in Arabia, receives appointment as a "military observer" to Prince Feisal (Alec Guiness), who is waging war with the Turkish Empire. But Feisel is part of the Bedouin and they are nomads who travel throughout the large Arabian dessert. Lawrence teams up with a native guide, learns how to ride a camel and is off to find Feisal. Distrust from Feisal's aide Ali Kharish (Omar Sharif) turns to admiration when Lawrence engineers an attack that weakens the Turkish hold on the waterfront city of Aqaba and paves the way for other Bedouin tribes to band together. Lawrence's larger than life vision of himself and his destiny transforms him into "El Aurens" among the guerrilla warriors who serve with him. As the legend of El Aurens grows within Arabia and England, he slowly must come to grips with the destiny he has created for himself...and now no longer controls.

Jessie Chambers Louie Burrows Freida Lawrence Age 38 September 11, 1885 - March 2, 1930 English Writer D.H. Lawrence is one of the 20th century's most inspired writers. A novelist, playwright, poet and psychologist, his impact on the way we think about love, sex, and cultural decay has been profound. His novels and poetry explore the ills created by the Industrial Revolution and the role of sexuality in human relationships. The dialectic between man and woman is a chief theme in Lawrence: Man the doer, the knower, the original in being is he the lord of life? Or is the woman, the great Mother, who bore us from the womb of love, is she the supreme Goddess? (Lawrence, Fantasia of the Unconscious The decay of the so-called "sexual revolution" today is an affirmation of Lawrence's theory of sexuality. Lawrence was most definitely a godfather of the 20th Century sexual revolution. In practice, the sexual revolution is or was a revolt against the depressing notion that our lives, controlled by growing governments and threatened by nuclear annihilation, are pre-ordained. Free will is just an empty metaphor inside this realm. The sexual revolution unleashed a potent rebellious impulse that contradicted the anxiousness of freedom-less reality.

Lawrence: Poet Keith Sagar has done more than any other critic to reshape understanding of Lawrence as poet. In this collection of essays, he writes, with unpretentious ease and the gravity that comes from a life-time's critical consideration, on the full range of the poetry. Christopher Pollnitz D. H. Lawrence wrote over a thousand poems. His standing as a poet would probably have been much higher but for his pre-eminence as a writer of fiction. Though much has been written about Lawrence's poetry (as revealed by the several hundred entries in the book's checklist of criticism), there have been relatively few full length studies. This book deals with the whole range of his poetry from his earliest poems, such as 'To Campions' and 'To Guelder Roses', through the poems inspired by his elopement with and subsequent marriage to Frieda Weekley ( 'Look! E rnest O. Lawrence (1901-1958) helped elevate American physics to world leadership. His invention of the cyclotron, an accelerator of subatomic particles, won him the Nobel Prize in 1939. His entrepreneurial development of the Radiation Laboratory at Berkeley ushered in the era of " Big Science. " During World War II Lawrence and his machines took part in the Manhattan Project, which produced the first atomic bombs. In the early Cold War years he played a key role in forging a new relationship between science and the federal government and in the establishment of a system of National Laboratories, two of which now bear his name. The photo used on this page is of a home built by Mr. Edward "Mutt" Branton. Apparently, Mr. Branton, as a young single man, built this house for a personal residence, likely in the 1940s, but unsure. The property is now thought to be owned by Mr. Gene Dawsey. I think Mr. Branton did eventually marry, and abandoned the place and moved to Columbia. (Information supplied to Don Norris by Chris at the Marion County Historical Society Lawrence County was established December 22nd, 1814, carved out of the county of Marion that was created three years prior to that time. The county was named in memory of Captain Jas. Lawrence, who commanded the ship Chesapeake in that struggle, and whose last words, when mortally wounded, were "don't give up the ship!"
