Lawrence, D.H.,
in full DAVID HERBERT LAWRENCE (b. Sept. 11, 1885, Eastwood, Nottinghamshire, Eng.d. March 2, 1930, Vence, France), English author of novels, short stories, poems, plays, essays, travel books, and letters. His novels Sons and Lovers The Rainbow (1915), and Women in Love (1920) made him one of the most influential English writers of the 20th century.
Youth and early career.
Lawrence was the fourth child of a north Midlands coal miner who was a dialect speaker, a drinker, and virtually illiterate. Lawrence's mother, who came from the south of England, was educated, refined, and pious. Lawrence won a scholarship to Nottingham High School (1898-1901) and left at 16 to earn a living as clerk in a factory, but he had to give up work after a first attack of pneumonia. Convalescing, he began visiting the Haggs Farm nearby and began an intense friendship (1902-10) with Jessie Chambers. He became a pupil-teacher in Eastwood in 1902 and, encouraged by Jessie, began to write in 1905; his first story was published in a local newspaper in 1907. He studied at University College, Nottingham, from 1906 to 1908, earning a teachers' certificate, and went on writing poems and stories and drafting his first novel, The White Peacock.

Lawrence of Arabia (1962) is the filmic retelling of Britishman T. E. Lawrence's heroic, autobiographical account of his own Arabian adventure, published in "The Seven Pillars of Wisdom" (originally published with the title Revolt in the Desert ). T he cinematic "men's film" (with first-time screenwriter Robert Bolt's screenplay) is a superb character study of a compelling cult hero, who exhibits homo-erotic tendences in his relationship with Arab blood brother Sherif Ali (Omar Sharif), a dark personal nature, and an obsession with Arabia itself. The beautiful masterpiece (accompanied by a superb score from Maurice Jarre) is thought by many to be director David Lean's best (even topping The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957) ), with its Super Panavision 70 mm scope, magnificent color cinematography and poetic imagery of the desert captured within a spectacular epic story of a larger-than-life, idealistic adventurer.

Rating: PG Genre: History/Drama/War Won Academy Awards for Best Art Direction, Cinematography, Sound, Film Editing, Score, Director and Best Picture. Nominated in 3 other categories. Ever since we've owned a DVD player, I've been dying for this movie to be released. It is one of the most entrancing epics ever filmed and it requires great sound, letterboxing and a big television to do it justice. In fact, it is one of those movies that should only be seen in a movie theater with a very large screen, but those are becoming just as rare as the films that require them. I first saw LAWRENCE in 1989 when it was re-released in its' newly restored version. I can honestly say I have never seen a movie before or since that is its equal in regards to a pure cinema experience. Nothing like this had been done before and nothing like it will ever be done again because to duplicate it would be prohibitively expensive. home reviews actors actresses ... all reviews

    Storyline
An inordinately complex man who has been labeled everything from hero, to charlatan, to sadist, Thomas Edward Lawrence blazed his way to glory in the Arabian desert, then sought anonymity as a common soldier under an assumed name. The story opens with the death of Lawrence in a motorcycle accident in London at the age of 47, then flashbacks to recount his adventures: as a young intelligence officer in Cairo in 1916, he is given leave to investigate the progress of the Arab revolt against the Turks in World War I. In the desert, he organizes a guerrilla army andfor two yearsleads the Arabs in harassing the Turks with desert raids, train-wrecking and camel attacks. Eventually, he leads his army northward and helps a British General destroy the power of the Ottoman Empire.

New York hit man Keller is a law unto himself, and when a situation goes awry -which despite his best laid plans it so often does - he makes some surprising judgement calls to provide a twist in the tale.
It’s not all drudgery in the life of an assassin. Keller’s jobs allow him access to all sorts of sporting events - following a baseball team round the country, providing the insurance for a fixed horse race, attending a basketball game in Indiana and playing golf in Arizona. He even gets to mix his passion for stamp-collecting with a hit on a famous philatelist.
