Lawrence Block
Evan, Bernie and Matt Have you seen our weblog or our monthly book review? Lawrence Block is a remarkably prolific, remarkably versatile author of at least three different mystery series, as well as quite a few singletons. I was introduced to his work in August of 1998, and had read most of three of his series by the end of that year. I recommend them highly.
Bernie Rhodenbarr
Bernie Rhodenbarr is a Manhattan burglar and bookseller who has an unfortunate tendency to find corpses in the apartments he's burgling. The Bernie books are consistently amusing and enjoyable. The following list includes all of the Bernie books I've read to date, in no particular order. I should say, order doesn't matter much with this particular series.

"The Beat Generation" Site Map
The history of literature has been "landmarked" by countless movements of varying styles and direction. The Beat Page is dedicated to the movement that began in the early 1950's with a small and tightly connected group of young writers who demonstrated a care-free, often reckless and unquestionably fresh approach to literature as well as a demonstrative social stance toward what was sometimes referred to as "The Establishment". The term " Beat " was reportedly coined by Jack Kerouac in the late 1940's, but became more common at about the time that writers like himself, Allen Ginsberg and Lawrence Ferlinghetti were beginning to get noticed. It was quickly becoming a slang term in America after World War II, meaning "exhausted" or "beat down" and provided this generation with a definitive label for their personal and social positions and perspectives. Writers Included Here: Richard Brautigan Charles Bukowski William S. Burroughs

Lawrence, D.H. Biography
David Herbert Lawrence (1885-1930) English novelist, story writer, critic, poet and painter, one of the greatest figures in 20th-century English literature. Lawrence's doctrines of sexual freedom arose obscenity trials, which are still part of the relationship between literature and society. He saw sex and intuition as a key to undistorted perception of reality and a way unburden individual's frustrations and maladjustment to industrial culture. In 1912 he wrote: "What the blood feels, and believes, and says, is always true." The author's frankness in describing sexual relations between men and women upset a great many people. Lawrence's life after World War I was marked with continuous and restless wandering. "The novel is the book of life. In this sense, the Bible is a great confused novel. You may say, it is about God. But it is really about man alive. Adam, Eve, Sarai, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Samuel, David, Bath-sheba, Ruth, Esther, Solomon, Job, Isaiah, Jesus, mark, Judas, Paul, Peter: what is it but man alive, from start to finish? Man alive, not mere bits. Even the Lord is another man alive, in a burning bush, throwing the tablets of stone at Moses's head." (from 'Why the Novel Matters' in D.H. Lawrence: Selected Criticism

San Francisco Collector of Customs deserves a word of thanks for seizing Allen Ginsberg's Howl and Other Poems thereby rendering it famous. Perhaps we could have a medal made. It would have taken years for critics to accomplish what the good collector did in a day, merely by calling the book obscene. LAWRENCE FERLINGHETTI San Francisco Chronicle

  • He became a little afraid, in the silence of sterile thought. After all, he needed the appearance of love and belief and bright life, he would never dare to face the fate worm of his own unbelief.
Summary Of The Story:
Yvette, a young girl, lives with her family in Papplewick, a little town down the hills in the valley in the north of England. One day, Yvette went out with her sister and some friends and there she met a dark man, a gipsy. She really liked the way he lived, so different.
And she started to love him. But the problem was that her father didn’t accept that she wanted to have a relationship with the gipsy. She was from that day on very unhappy and fell terrible. So one day, Yvette went for a bicycle ride but on that moment the dam of the river in Papplewick broke. Yvette was almost drawn when the gipsy saved her. He dragged her to her house. So she was saved but when she woke up, the gipsy wasn’t there anymore. First she thought that he was dead but then she received a letter of the gipsy. And he wrote that he hoped that he will see her one day. And he ended his letter with Joe Boswell, his name, and only then Yvette realized that he had a name.

Lawrence Durrell (1912-1990) Anglo-Irish novelist, playwright, best known for THE ALEXANDRIA QUARTET (1957-60). Many once believed it would secure Durrell the Nobel Prize for Literature. The experimental novel of mystery, love, and espionage explored memory and knowledge, contrasting in its story the love affair of a young writer with the recollections of the other people. Durrell spent most of his life outside England – in India, Corfu, Egypt, Yugoslavia, Rhodes, Cyprus, and the south of France. "Hellenic worlds are replaced here by something different, something subtly androgynous, inverted upon itself. The Orient cannot rejoice in the sweet anarchy of the body - for it has outstripped the body. I remember Nessim once saying - I think he was quoting - that Alexandria was the great winepress of love; those who emerged from it were the sick men, the solitaries, the prophets - I mean all who have been deeply wounded in their sex." (from Justine, part one of the
