1849 - Emma Lazarus, born in New York City on the 22nd of July to Moses and Esther Nathan Lazarus, she grew up around New York's vibrant Union Square.
1866 - When She was seventeen, his father privately published her first book, Poems and Translations Written Between the Ages of Fourteen and Seventeen.
1868 - She sent Ralph Waldo Emerson a copy of her first book. Over the next few years, Emerson became a trusted mentor, offering notes on her poems that ranged from enthusiastic praise to more critical demands.
1871 - Published Admetus and Other Poems.
1874 - Assumed her poems would be included in her mentor's anthology entitled Parnassus. Instead she was surprised and angry to find her name missing from Emerson's selections. She sent him a strong letter demanding an explanation.
1876 - She also completed a drama, The Spagnoletto, which was praised by friends like Thomas W. Higginson, but privately published and never performed.

American poet Emma Lazarus.

Library of Congress Emma Lazarus, an American poet, is best known as a spokesperson for the Jewish people. Her faith in America as a safe place for all the suffering people of the world is expressed in her poem inscribed on the Statue of Liberty in New York, New York.
Early life and writings
When Emma was seventeen her father paid to have her first collection of poems printed. Poems and Translations (public edition 1867) was followed by Admetus and Other Poems and In 1874 she published her first prose (a style of writing closer to normal speech than poetry), Her five-act drama, The Spagnoletto Poems and Ballads (1881) was considered the best version of Heine in English at the time.

Lazarus, Emma
(b . July 22, 1849, New York, N.Y., U.S.d. Nov. 19, 1887, New York City), American writer best known for her sonnet "The New Colossus," written to the Statue of Liberty. Born into a cultured family of Sefardic (Spanish Jewish) stock, Lazarus learned languages and the classics at an early age. Her first book (1867) included poems and translations and caught the attention of Ralph Waldo Emerson, with whom she corresponded thereafter. At 21 she published Admetus and Other Poems (1871). She also wrote a prose romance ( Alide ) based on J.W. von Goethe's autobiography; a tragedy ( The Spagnoletto ); and a translation, Poems and Ballads of Heinrich Heine (1881). About 1881 she took up the defense of persecuted Jews and began working for the relief of new immigrants in the United States. "The New Colossus" (1883), written to express her faith in America as a refuge for the oppressed, closes with the lines: Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses, yearning to breathe
