SUMMARY Gustave LeBon's The Crowd is not only a classic, but one of the best-selling scienti¬c books in social psychology and collective behavior ever written. Here, LeBon analyzes the nature of crowds and their role in political movements. He presents crowd behavior as a problem of science and power, a natural phenomenon with practical implications. Originally published in 1895, LeBon's book was the ¬rst to expand the scope of inquiry beyond criminal crowds to include all possible kinds of collective phenomena. Its continuing signi¬cance is evident even in the Los Angeles riots of 1992 in which LeBon's theories were cited in testimony. Le Bon, Gustave
(b . May 7, 1841, Nogent-le-Rotrou, Franced. Dec. 13, 1931, Marnes-la-Coquette), French social psychologist best known for his study of the psychological characteristics of crowds. After receiving a doctorate of medicine, Le Bon traveled in Europe, North Africa, and Asia and wrote several books on anthropology and archaeology. His interests later shifted to natural science and social psychology. In The Psychology of Peoples ) he developed a view that history is the product of racial or national character, with emotion, not intelligence, the dominant force in social evolution. He attributed true progress to the work of an intellectual elite. Le Bon believed that modern life was increasingly characterized by crowd assemblages. In La psychologie des foules The Crowd ), his most popular work, he argued that the conscious personality of the individual in a crowd is submerged and that the collective crowd mind dominates; crowd behaviour is unanimous, emotional, and intellectually weak. Book Summary of The Crowd: A Study Of The Popular Mind
The rise of mass media has changed the way societies think, and that they can think as a whole. French psychologist and sociologist GUSTAVE LE BON (1841-1931) recognized that late in the 19th century when he wrote what would become a foundational work of the study of the psychology of the masses. From criminal juries to parliamentary assemblies, religious sects to economic classes, Le Bon explores the nature of the many and varied collective consciousnesses that impact the very functioning of modern civilization. First published in French in 1895 and in English in 1896, The Crowd was a profound influence on Freud, Hitler, and Mussolini, and it is a must read for anyone who wants to understand everything from the power of advertising to the sway of propaganda, from the functioning of elections to the influence of the grass roots ALSO FROM COSIMO: Le Bon's The Psychology of Revolution
