DOVER KENT ARCHIVES PUB LIST PUBLIC HOUSES Paul Skelton Ship and Castle or 57 Lower Street Deal Earliest tracing of this pub is 1804, and described as a common lodging house. Frequented by tramps, two of which said they had lodged there in 1863. However, further research has indicated that it changed name to the " Sir John Falstaff " in 1872. The number also seems to have changed from 52 to 57, but that may be an error by the paper that reported the above information. Wednesday - Before W. M. Cavell, Esq, Mayor and J. Iggluden Esq. John Donovan and Ann Donovan, husband and wife, and members of the medical fraternity, were placed at the bar on two charges of assault and two also of committing wilful damage. The nature of the charges is disclosed in the following evidence:- Police-constable Seeth, who deposed to being sent for, as stated by the last witness, and also to seeing Donovan in the condition named, with his wife clinging to him, said - I went to fetch Cox, and on returning the prisoners had left the "Ship and Castle." We afterwards saw them in Water Street, and there took Donovan into custody. The man, offered much resistance, but the woman went quietly to the station. The Bench sentenced the male prisoner to 21 days imprisonment in Sandwich goal with hard labour, and the female to seven days, also with hard labour.

The Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States (MOLLUS) was founded by Federal Officers of the Civil War the day President Abraham Lincoln died on April 15, 1865. This website contains a listing of nearly 12,000 Original Companions who served as officers during the Civil War or continued in the military service after the War, eventually becoming commissioned officers. Please see our MOLLUS Home Page and the MOLLUS Web Site Index Page for additional history of the Order. The lists provide the name of the Companion, his military rank, regiment, and branch of service. There are some Companions of the "3rd Class" or what is today referred to as "Honorary" Companions who did not serve in the military or qualify for membership but who did significantly contribute to the war effort or contributed to the well being of the Republic and personified in their own lives the principles of the Order. Descendants of many deceased officers joined as hereditary members and today our membership is open to descendants of all eligile officers. Future revisons of this website will include these officers as well as their service records have been added to the history of our Order. This was data compiled by generations of members of MOLLUS who faithfully served the Order. This listing was originally compiled by Past Commander-in-Chief Dr. Robert Girrard Carroon and has been edited by Past Commander-in-Chief Douglas Reed Niermeyer.
