Charles Godfrey Leland
Written and compiled by George Knowles.
Charles G. Leland was an American scholar, folklorist, humorist and prolific author who wrote several classic books on English Gypsies and Italian Witches. These include Etruscan Roman Remains Legends of Florence The Gypsies Gypsy Sorcery and perhaps his most famous book Aradia: Gospel of the Witches . During his time he wrote more than fifty books on a variety subjects, and penned uncounted articles for many major periodicals. His writings inspired the likes of Gerald Gardner and Doreen Valiente as well as many other pioneers of modern day Witchcraft. In America he is also recognized for his effort to establish Industrial Art as a branch of public education. Born of old English descent Lelands ancestral lineage can be traced back to a John Leland who in 1530 was a chaplain and librarian to King Henry VIII. He is distinguished in that a special position was created for him in 1533 when he became the first person to be appointed Royal Antiquary. Another distinguished ancestor is Charles Leland who was Secretary of the Society of Antiquaries during the reign of Charles 1. Other members of his linage moved to America in 1636 and were prominent among the early pilgrims to settle in Massachusetts.

Leland, Charles Godfrey
(b. Aug. 15, 1824, Philadelphiad. March 20, 1903, Florence), American poet and writer of miscellany, best-known for the "Hans Breitmann Ballads," which reproduce the dialect and humour of the Philadelphia Germans (also called Pennsylvania Dutch). Leland studied for two years in Germany, where he became fascinated with German culture. On his return to America he studied and then practiced law. In 1853 he turned to journalism and worked for a number of years on Barnum's Illustrated News, the Philadelphia Evening Bulletin, and Vanity Fair . He also edited Graham's Magazine, where he published the first of his German-English poems, "Hans Breitmann's Barty" (1857). Written in a mixture of German and broken English and first published in the 1860s and 1870s, the poems were later collected in The Breitmann Ballads (new ed., 1895). After inheriting his father's estate in 1869, Leland abandoned journalism, preferring to pursue his interest in folklore, mysticism, and the occult. He lived mostly in Italy and Germany after 1884. PREFACE.
This work, then, contains a collection of the myths, legends, and folk-lore of the principal Wabanaki, or Northeastern Algonquin, Indians; that is to say, of the Passamaquoddies and Penobscots of Maine, and of the Micmacs of New Brunswick. All of this material was gathered directly from Indian narrators, the greater part by myself, the rest by a few friends; in fact, I can give the name of the aboriginal authority for every tale except one. As my chief object has been simply to collect and preserve valuable material, I have said little of the labors of such critical writers as Brinton, Hale, Trumbull, Powers, Morgan, Bancroft, and the many more who have so ably studied and set forth red Indian ethnology. If I have rarely ventured on their field, it is because I believe that when the Indian shall have passed away there will come far better ethnologists than I am, who will be much more obliged to me for collecting raw material than for cooking it.
Two or three subjects have, it is true, tempted me into occasional commenting. The manifest, I may say the undeniable, affinity between the myths and legends of the Northeastern Indians and those of the Eskimo could hardly be passed over, nor at the same time the identity of the latter and of the Shaman religion with those of the Finns, Laplanders, and Samoyedes. I believe that I have contributed material not devoid of value to those who are interested in the study of the relations of the aborigines of America with the Mongoloid races of the Old World. This is a subject which has been very little studied through the relations of these Wabanaki with the Eskimo.
