Jump to: navigation search Previous (Library classification) Next (Libya) Main Library of Congress Building at the start of the twentieth century The Library of Congress , located in Washington, D.C. , is the national library of the United States , and represents the research arm of the U.S. Congress. It is one of the largest libraries in the world, holding more than 29 million books and printed materials in 470 languages. It is home to the world’s largest collection of legal materials and the largest collection of published aeronautical literature. The library holds the largest rare book collection in North America. The Library of Congress began with the limited mission of providing research support to members of Congress after the relocation of the federal capital to the new city of Washington, D.C. in November, 1800. Due to British soldiers burning of most of Washington, D.C. including the the U.S. Capitol building during the War of 1812 , the original collection was destroyed. Ameliorating the disastrous effects of the loss, Thomas Jefferson donated his personal collection to the library. By some estimates his was the largest private library in the United States at that time. Today the library maintains its mission to support the Congress while also making its massive collection accessible to scholars worldwide.

The LCCN numbering system has been in use since 1898, at which time the acronym LCCN originally stood for Library of Congress Card Number. The Library of Congress prepared cards of bibliographic information for their library catalog and would sell duplicate sets of the cards to other libraries for use in their catalogs. This is known as centralized cataloging. Each set of cards was given a serial number to help identify it. Although most of the bibliographic information is now electronically created, stored and shared with other libraries, there is still a need to identify each unique record, and the LCCN continues to perform that function. Librarians all over the world use this unique identifier in the process of cataloging most books which have been published in the United States. It helps them reach the correct cataloging data (known as a cataloging record), which the Library of Congress and third parties make available on the Web and through other media.

My Friend Flickr: A Match Made in Photo Heaven January 16th, 2008 by Matt Raymond As a communicator, I want to expand the reach of the Library and access to our magnificent collections as far and wide as possible. Of course, there are only so many hours in the day, so many staff in Library offices and so many dollars in the budget. Priorities have to be chosen that will most effectively advance our mission Flickr , the enormously popular photo-sharing site that has been a Web 2.0 innovator. If all goes according to plan, the project will help address at least two major challenges: how to ensure better and better access to our collections, and how to ensure that we have the best possible information about those collections for the benefit of researchers and posterity. In many senses, we are looking to enhance our metadata (one of those Web 2.0 buzzwords that 90 percent of our readers could probably explain better than me). The project is beginning somewhat modestly, but we hope to learn a lot from it. Out of some 14 million prints, photographs and other visual materials at the Library of Congress, more than 3,000 photos from two of our most popular collections are being made available on our new

Bands of this kind served in the armies of both the North and the South during the Civil War. This online collection includes both printed and manuscript music (mostly in the form of "part books" for individual instruments) selected from the collections of the Music Division of the Library of Congress and the Walter Dignam Collection of the Manchester Historic Association (Manchester, New Hampshire). The collection features over 700 musical compositions, as well as 8 full-score modern editions and 19 recorded examples of brass band music in performance. The mission of the Library of Congress is to make its resources available and useful to Congress and the American people and to sustain and preserve a universal collection of knowledge and creativity for future generations. The goal of the Library's National Digital Library Program is to offer broad public access to a wide range of historical and cultural documents as a contribution to education and lifelong learning. The Library of Congress presents these documents as part of the record of the past. These primary historical documents reflect the attitudes, perspectives, and beliefs of different times. The Library of Congress does not endorse the views expressed in these collections, which may contain materials offensive to some readers.
