Preservation Frequently Asked Questions
  • How should I store my books? How should I display documents or works of art on paper? Can I save wet books? What if my books are moldy? How can I get rid of the smell of mildew in my books? ... What If I have other questions about preservation of library and archives materials? How should I store my books? Store books out of direct sunlight and where air can circulate freely. Store them away from windows and don't put them on shelves against outside walls. Store books on flat, smooth shelves that are strong enough to support their weight. Ideally, books should not be in contact with unsealed wood because it can release damaging acidic vapors. Line shelves with acid free board to prevent this problem. Stand books vertically side by side. Keep similar sizes together: small books next to small books, and large books next to large books. Use bookends to keep the books from falling over, and be sure they are high enough to support the books completely. Avoid storing books in an attic or basement because attics get too hot and basements get too damp. Both are also subject to rapid changes in temperature and humidity levels. Keep books out from under plumbing and water pipes; water damage from these sources is all too common.

Today, there is a State Center for the Book in all 50 states, as well as the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands. These Center for the Book affiliates carry out the national Center's mission in their local areas, sponsor programs that highlight their area's literary heritage and call attention to the importance of books, reading, literacy and libraries. Affiliates must submit an application to become part of and retain their Center for the Book status, which is renewable for a three-year period. The Center for the Book has established Guidelines for establishing affiliates and for programming activities. The State Centers gather annually at the Library of Congress for an Idea Exchange Day.

The library was originally housed in the Capitol, and most of its books were destroyed when the British shelled the building during the War of 1812. The major step in rebuilding the collection was taken in 1815, when Congress purchased the 6,000-volume personal library of Thomas Jefferson. With the purchase of the books of Dr. Otto H.F. Vollbehr in 1930, the library more than doubled the size of its collection of incunabula, which is now the largest in the Western Hemisphere. The main Library of Congress building was erected in 1897; the library also occupies the Thomas Jefferson building, formerly called the annex, and the new James Madison building. The post of Librarian of Congress, appointed by the president with the advice and consent of the Senate, has often gone to eminent scholars and artists, as well as to professional librarians. Recent Librarians of Congress include Archibald MacLeish (1939-44), L. Quincy Mumford (1954-74), Daniel J. Boorstin (1974-87), and James H. Billington (1987- ).

New Password Requirements A Library of Congress catalog control number is a unique identification number that the Library of Congress assigns to the catalog record created for each book in its cataloged collections. Librarians use it to locate a specific Library of Congress catalog record in the national databases and to order catalog cards from the Library of Congress or from commercial suppliers. The Library of Congress assigns this number while the book is being cataloged. Under certain circumstances, however, a control number can be assigned before the book is published through the Preassigned Control Number Program.

    Library of Congress:
    Jacques Halevy
One of France's greatest composers, Jacques Fromenthal Halevy (1799-1862), was also the son of a cantor. His father, Elie Halfon Halevy was the secretary of the Jewish community of Paris and a Hebrew teacher and writer as well. Musically gifted, Jacques was accepted as a student by the Paris Conservatory at age ten and subsequently became a member of its faculty, rising to the rank of professor in 1833. His lasting fame was assured by his grand opera La Juive Marche Funebre et De Profundis en Hebreu for three voices and orchestra. On its engraved title page, Halevy was described as a member of the Royal Institute of Music and a recipient of the patronage of the King of France at the Academy of Rome.

Gateway to Knowledge Guest Post #8 October 25, 2010 by Matt Raymond This is the eighth in a series of guest posts by Abigail Van Gelder, who with her husband, Josh, is journeying across the country on the Library’s “ Gateway to Knowledge ” traveling exhibition: Now that we have gushed about hitting fall foliage for the past few weeks, I should mention something else also comes with fall, high school homecoming.  Our event location for Troy, OH was at Hobart Arena, right next to the high school’s football field.  It was hard not to get caught up in all the excitement surrounding the Homecoming game. It’s not every day that we need to get up bright and early to take part in a live broadcast from the truck, but it sure is exciting.  Fox 45 out of Dayton stopped by on the Friday of our event to chat with us on the Morning News.  This is just one of the unpredictable elements of our job, one of the things that make it great. I can honestly say that there is not typical day in the field.  We both feel very fortunate to have found our career and that the Library of Congress trusts us with their endeavor.   While traveling with the Gateway to Knowledge exhibit, we are firsthand in seeing the impact the available resources have on inspiring learning and exploration.
