F ranz Liszt has emerged as one of the most awe-inspiring figures in all of music history. Regarded by most as the greatest pianist of all time, Liszt's genius extended far beyond the piano to expand musical composition and performance well beyond its 19th century limitations. His unique compositions bewildered, inspired, and inflamed the imaginations of his own era, yet quite miraculously, he also laid the seeds for a series of schools that would flourish in the near and distant future. Namely, the Late Romantic, Impressionist, and Atonal schools. For these remarkable contributions, Liszt is unique, and his immense influence is unquestionably monumental.
A brief overview indicates... His piano compositions stand as pinnacles of the literature. His vast array of innovations in keyboard technique and overall development remain unrivalled. He invented the symphonic poem interrupted by a pause. Liszt was bold enough to abolish this restraint and devise a single, sweeping movement that carried the listener from beginning to end, without the

He lived with Mme d'Agoult (better known by her pen name, Daniel Stern) from 1833 to 1844, and they had three children; their daughter Cosima became the wife of Hans von and later of Wagner . As a piano virtuoso, Liszt enthralled his audiences with his expressive interpretations and grand style of playing, augmented with dramatic gestures. program music over traditional musical forms. Liszt originated the symphonic poem, and although he wrote symphonies, such as the Faust Symphony (1857), most of his orchestral pieces, including and Mazeppa (both 1854), are symphonic poems. In his Sonata in B Minor (1853) he developed the technique of transformation of themes, which completely altered the concept of sonata construction. This technique, together with his chromatic harmony, strongly influenced both Wagner and Richard Strauss For the piano Liszt composed prolifically in addition to transcribing many works of other composers. His most outstanding works for the piano include

When I discovered Franz Liszt had been interested enough in gypsies to become their friend, and to even spend time in a gypsy encampment in his childhood home of Hungary, I immediately became very interested in him as a man as well as a musician. On one occasion when he visited the camp, he was given a pile of fur skins as a seat of honour, and from this special vantage position he watched the men eating meat and honey, while the women danced, crashing their tambourines and shouting to each other. Then the men rose to examine several horses they had been given, and were so delighted with the animals, they threw their caps into the air with joy before taking up their violins and cymbals to play in excited celebration. I could hear, even see all this happening when I played his Hungarian Rhapsody No. 9 The series of pieces he called 'Magyar Dallock', which were later published as 'Hungarian Rhapsodies' were also based on music he had heard the gypsies play. He is said to have admired their prophetic talent, and although he found their primitive ways both erotic and barbarous, the simplicity of their life also charmed him. As a boy he was influenced by the gypsy violinist Janos Bihari, and for this reason had a rich knowledge of his country's national music to draw on. But his fascination with their music related directly to his own attraction to the colourful and unconventional.
