Livingstone, David 1813 to 1873 Congregational South Africa / Botswana / Zambia / Tanzania / Malawi / Angola / Mozambique
Scottish missionary and explorer. He first came to South Africa in 1841 to found a mission station among the Kwena of SECHELE. Tired of working in one place, in the late 1840s he explored northern Botswana in search of new mission fields. In 1851 he reached the Zambezi River where he met the Kololo king SEBITWANE. Livingstone was enthused by the idea of opening a mission among the Kololo; he set as his life's work expanding Christian frontiers in Africa. Several years later he returned to the Kololo, now ruled by Sebitwane's son SEKELETU. With their aid he walked to Luanda on the west coast, and then to Quilimane on the east coast in search of a practical route inland (1853-6). Along the way he saw and named the Victoria Falls. Livingstone returned to Britain to find his travels had caused a sensation, and he used his new fame to promote British interest in the Zambezi region. His lectures inspired the immediate founding of the Universities' Mission Society. His own London Missionary Society launched missions to the Kololo and to the Ndebele of MZILIKAZI. David Livingstone (1813 - 1873)
David Livingstone   Livingstone was a Scottish missionary and one of the greatest European explorers of Africa, whose opening up the interior of the continent contributed to the 'Scramble for Africa'. David Livingstone was born at Blantyre, south of Glasgow on 19 March 1813. At 10 he began working in the local cotton mill, with school lessons in the evenings. In 1836, he began studying medicine and theology in Glasgow and decided to become a missionary doctor. In 1841, he was posted to the edge of the Kalahari Desert in southern Africa. In 1845, he married Mary Moffat, daughter of a fellow missionary. Livingstone became convinced of his mission to reach new peoples in the interior of Africa and introduce them to Christianity, as well as freeing them from slavery. It was this which inspired his explorations. In 1849 and 1851, he travelled across the Kalahari, on the second trip sighting the upper Zambezi River. In 1842, he began a four year expedition to find a route from the upper Zambezi to the coast. This filled huge gaps in western knowledge of central and southern Africa. In 1855, Livingstone discovered a spectacular waterfall which he named 'Victoria Falls'. He reached the mouth of the Zambezi on the Indian Ocean in May 1856, becoming the first European to cross the width of southern Africa.

His meeting with H. M. Stanley gave rise to the popular quotation, Dr. Livingstone, I presume? Perhaps one of the most popular national heroes of the late 19th century in Victorian Britain, Livingstone had a mythic status, which operated on a number of interconnected levels: that of Protestant missionary martyr, that of working-class "rags to riches" inspirational story, that of scientific investigator and explorer, that of imperial reformer, anti-slavery crusader, and advocate of commercial empire. His fame as an explorer helped drive forward the obsession with discovering the sources of the River Nile that formed the culmination of the classic period of European geographical discovery and colonial penetration of the African continent. At the same time his missionary travels, "disappearance" and death in Africa, and subsequent glorification as posthumous national hero in 1874 led to the founding of several major central African Christian missionary initiatives carried forward in the era of the European "

Africans learned of the faith through devout Christians who traveled to Africa on a mission to teach their religion. The missionaries did more than share their faith; they also taught the African people modern science and medicine. David Livingstone was the most famous African missionary. Livingstone first planned to become a medical missionary in China, but the Opium Wars made China a bad place for a westerner with good intentions. Livingston turned instead to Africa and, after a four-month journey, landed in Cape Town, in modern South Africa, in 1841. Livingstone treated the Africans with respect. He learned their

At age 27 Livingstone sailed from Scotland to South Africa as a Christian missionary. He spent much of the next 33 years traveling in the African interior, eventually becoming as famous for his explorations as for his missionary work. Perhaps his most famous act was reaching and naming Victoria Falls in 1855. In 1871 journalist Henry Stanley tracked the explorer down in Africa, greeting him with the famous words "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?" Livingstone died two years later, and after a journey of nearly a year his body was returned to England, where it was buried in Westminster Abbey on 18 April 1874. Livingstone Memorial - Victoria Falls David Livingstone
It was the mighty Zambezi which led missionary Dr. David Livingstone on his greatest and final adventure. In search of a means to access the interior, Livingstone tagged the Zambezi "God's highway" to the Indian Ocean and set off down the river, discovering the great cataract native Africans called Mosi-o-Tunya, "the smoke that thunders." Livingstone christened the great waterfall Victoria Falls after his queen. Today, the great chasm has lost none of it's allure, still considered one of the great natural wonders of the world.
David Livingstone: African Explorer
Few Europeans have contributed as much to the exploration of Africa as a gentle Scottish missionary named David Livingstone. Livingstone was a curious combination of missionary, doctor, explorer, scientist and anti-slavery activist. He spent 30 years in Africa, exploring almost a third of the continent, from its southern tip almost to the equator. Livingstone received a gold medal from the London Royal Geographical for being the first to cross the entire African Continent from west to east. He was the first white man to see Victoria Falls and though he never discovered the source of the Nile, one of his goals, he eliminated some possibilities and thereby helped direct the efforts of others. Although popular among native tribes in Africa, Livingstone made enemies of some white settlers there because he learned African languages and had an unusually keen understanding and sympathy for native people and cultures. In 1843, while settling the Mabotsa valley, Livingstone shot a lion. Before it died, however, the lion attacked Livingstone, costing him the use of his left arm.

Livingstone, David 1813 to 1873 Congregational South Africa / Botswana / Zambia / Tanzania / Malawi / Angola / Mozambique
Awakening the Western World to Africa If any "man in the street"at least, in any British streetwere asked at any time in the last century to name a Christian missionary, it is likely that he would name David Livingstone. This might indeed be the only missionary name he could think of. Somehow Livingstone has come to stand as the representative missionary, the missionary par excellence. Yet he was hardly a typical missionary. Of his thirty years in Africa not much over a third was spent in the service of a missionary society, and even then his independence of action was untypical, his relations with missionary colleagues and directors often brittle. His fame as an explorer, his zeal in scientific investigation, his widely canvassed views on European commerce and settlement in Africa, his service in government appointments, his activity against the Arab slave tradeall have raised in many minds the doubt whether or not missionary vocation was the primary factor in his career.
