Leaving his well-established work among the Namangwato, the Bakaa, the Makalaka, and the Bechuana tribes to be carried on by trained native helpers, this fearless man pressed onalways toward the dark interior. When his course was criticized, he wrote, I will go anywhere, provided it be forward. " and "forward" he went.
Livingstone's mind was one of that broad character which at the outset grasps the whole of a problem, and to those who have followed his later course it is clear why he saw no duty in settling down on one fixed spot to teach and preach in a slavery-harrowed land. He knew that, first, there must be a mighty clearing out of this evil. As for his own intent, he said, "Cannot the love of Christ carry the missionary where the slave-trade carries the trader?" David Livingstone: The Pathfinder of Africa
from Giants of the Missionary Trial by Eugene Myers Harrison A young Scotsman had come to hear an address by a celebrated missionary. Following his conversion several years earlier, the young man had begun to grapple with the question, "What shall I do with my life?" The Great Commission had come to have a singular hold upon his mind. Its majestic syllables had for him a contemporaneous significance: "All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world." (Matt. 28:18-20). "All authority is given unto me." The same power is available! "Go and evangelize all nations."

Livingstone's own conversion came when he realized that faith and science were compatible. He believed the best way to share his faith with the Africans was to teach them about the world. Livingstone respected Africans and learned their languages and customs. He was appalled by the way the Dutch and Portuguese colonists treated the African people and his writings told the world about the slave trade. Livingstone supported his work by writing books about his travels. His geographical, botanical , medical, and social discoveries were extensive.

Livingstone, David I. Introduction Livingstone, David (1813-1873), Scottish missionary and physician, who spent half his life exploring southern and central Africa. In addition to adding greatly to Europe's knowledge of the continent's geography, he heightened Western awareness of Africa and stimulated Christian missionary activity there. His activities helped bring about the Scramble for Africa, in which European powers seized virtually all of Africa in the late 19th century and early 20th century. Livingstone was born in Blantyre, Scotland, to religious, working-class parents. At age ten he began working in the local cotton mill, with long hours and meager pay. He read and studied diligently when not at work and in 1836 entered Anderson's College (now the University of Strathclyde) in Glasgow. Theology and medicine were his primary interests. In 1838 the London Missionary Society accepted him as a candidate, and two years later he received a medical degree from the University of Glasgow. The First Opium War (1839-1843) between Britain and China ruined his hopes of becoming a medical missionary to China, but the missionary society arranged a new placement for him in southern Africa. Livingstone, David
One of the most important European explorers of Africa, missionary and also a pioneer of the abolition of the slave trade, David Livingstone was born in Blantyre, Lanarkshire, Scotland, on 19 March 1813 as one of seven children of a very poor family. He was already working in a cotton mill by the time that he was 10. What little education he had, came basically through his own efforts, and from the determination of his strict Calvinists parents. During 1834 he became aware of a request by British and American churches for medical missionaries to work in China, and he decided that it should be his future career. For two years he studied theology and medicine while continuing to work part-time. Although the London Missionary Society accepted Livingstone in 1838, he was prohibited from going to China due to the Opium War. An ensuing discussion with the noted missionary to Southern Africa, Robert Moffat, convinced him that he should pursue his career in Africa, and he left for the Cape on 8 December 1840. He sailed for Africa, going out by way of Brazil and the Cape of Good Hope where he stepped ashore on 14 March 1841. From the outset he decided to become an explorer to assist in opening up the continent for Christianity and Western civilization. He travelled north via the Transvaal, and by the middle of 1842 he went into the Kalahari territory, which was farther than any European had ventured before. From Kuruman he made several trips deeper into the country. Here he established a mission at Mabotsa in 1844. Livingstone married Moffat's daughter, Mary, who then accompanied him on his travels until 1852. During the period mentioned, he achieved his first step on the way to fame when he assisted in the discovery of Lake Ngami on 1 August 1849. The British Royal Geographical Society, for this achievement, awarded him a gold medal and a monetary prize. By 1852 his wife and their four children returned to Scotland due to her health as well as the need for the children's security and education.
