SLATER's Directory - Portadown (1881) Extracted from: SLATER'S Royal National Commercial Directory of Ireland (published. in Manchester, 1881). PORTADOWN - A market town, partly in the parish of SEAGOE, barony of O'Neiland East, but chiefly in the parish of DRUMCREE, barony of O'Neilland West, county of Armagh, is 84 miles N. from Dublin, 26 S.W. by W. from Belfast, 19 W.S.W. from Lisburn, 15 E. from Dungannon, 10 N.E. by N. from Armagh, 4 S. from Lough Neagh, 6-1/2 E. by N. from Loughgall, 5-1/2 S.W. from Lurgan, the same distance N.E. from Richhill, and 4-1/2 N.W. by N. from Gilford; eligibly situated on the river Bann, over which is a Stone bridge of five arches, connecting it with the small suburb of EDENDERRY, in the parish of SEAGOE.
The Newry canal joins the river about a mile above the town, and the latter falls into Lough Neagh at its southern side, and issuing at the opposite point loses itself in the sea below Coleraine, thus forming, in connection with the canal, a water communication between that place and Newry. This is now but little used, consequent on the opening of railway communication with all parts of the country. The Great Northern and the Ulster lines of railway have a joint Station conveniently close to the town.

Katherine Holroyd looked up from her needlework. She was a gentle, fair-haired woman of thirty, with demure blue eyes, which regarded the girl with a mingling of pity, protection, and amusement. "My dear," she said, "whenever I see a pretty girl fooling about with a primitive man I always think of a sweet little monkey I once knew, who used to have great sport with a lyddite shell. Her master kept it on his table as a paper-weight, and no one knew it was loaded. One day she hit the shell in the wrong placeand they're still looking for the monkey. Don't think Dick is the empty shell." Whereupon she resumed her work, and for a few moments the click of thimble and needle alone broke the summer stillness. Viviette lay idly on a long garden chair admiring the fit of a pair of dainty tan shoes, which she twiddled with graceful twists of the ankles some five feet from her nose. At Mrs. Holroyd's remark she laughed after the manner of one quite contented with herselfa low, musical laugh, in harmony with the blue June sky and the flowering chestnuts and the song of the thrushes.

    John Locke Philosophy
John Locke: An Essay Concerning Human Understanding in Focus by Gary Fuller, John Locke's Essay Concerning Human Understanding is among the most important books in philosophy ever written. It is a difficult work dealing with many themes, including the origin of ideas; the extent and limits of human knowledge; the philosophy of perception; and religion and morality. This volume focuses on the last two topics and provides a clear and insightful survey of these overlooked aspects of Locke's best known work. Four eminent Locke scholars present authoritative discussions of Locke's view on the ethics of belief, personal identity, free will and moral theory. Contributors include John Passmore, Harold Noonan, Vere Chappell, and Daniel Flage. CLICK HERE
