Hugh Lofting
Hugh Lofting was born in Maidenhead, Berkshire, England, on January 14, 1886 to John Brien Lofting and Elizabeth Agnes Gannon. Lofting attended Mount St. Mary's, a Jesuit boarding school in Chesterfield, Derbyshire until 1904, then went to MIT in the United States, where he was trained as a civil engineer. While serving in the Irish Guard during World War 1, Lofting began writing letters home to his children that included the character of a country doctor who loved animals. The characters name was Dr. Dolittle. After being wounded, Lofting left the Guard and moved to New York City in the hopes of becoming a writer. He completed his first book, The Voyage of Dr. Dolittle , in 1922. The book was a success and earned him the "Best Children's Book of the Year Award" by The Newberry Committee (an award usually reserved for American authors). Several books followed, including Dr. Dolittle in the Moon

Hugh Lofting (1886–1947) , children's author and civil engineer wrote Doctor Dolittle Once upon a time, many years ago when our grandfathers were little childrenthere was a doctor; and his name was Dolittle John Dolittle, M.D. "M.D." means that he was a proper doctor and knew a whole lot. He lived in a little town called, Puddleby-on-the-Marsh. All the folks, young and old, knew him well by sight. And whenever he walked down the street in his high hat everyone would say, "There goes the Doctor! He's a clever man." And the dogs and the children would all run up and follow behind him; and even the crows that lived in the church-tower would caw and nod their heads. Hugh John Lofting was born in Maidenhead, Berkshire county, England on 14 January 1886. His father was an Irishman, John Brien Lofting and his mother, Elizabeth Agnes Gannon, was English. Even as a young man Hugh loved animals and had a great imagination. Creative and ambitious, at the age of eighteen he traveled to the United States to begin his study of civil engineering at the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He graduated from London Polytechnic and launched into fulfilling his dream of traveling the world, first working in Canada in 1908 as a surveyor.

Lofting, Hugh
(b. Jan. 14, 1886, Maidenhead, Berkshire, Eng.d. Sept. 26, 1947, Santa Monica, Calif., U.S.), English-born American author of a series of children's classics about Dr. Dolittle, a chubby, gentle, eccentric physician to animals, who learns the language of animals from his parrot, Polynesia, so that he can treat their complaints more efficiently. Much of the wit and charm of the stories lies in their matter-of-fact treatment of the doctor's bachelor household in Puddleby-on-the-Marsh, where his housekeeper, Dab-Dab, is a duck and his visitors and patients are animals. Lofting attended a Jesuit boarding school in Derbyshire from the age of eight. He studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, in 1904-05 and completed his studies in civil engineering at the London Polytechnic in 1906-07. His work took him to Africa, the West Indies, and Canada, but in 1912 he decided to become a writer and settled in New York City. He lived most of his life in the United States, but the ambience of all his books is English. Since Dr. Dolittle was originally created to entertain Lofting's children in letters he sent from the front during World War I, it is not surprising that he was a firm opponent of war, violence, and cruelty. After serving in Flanders and France, Lofting was wounded and invalided out. The Story of Dr. Dolittle
