Not only was he one of the most popular and highest-paid novelists of his day, but also he was widely known as a political lecturer, socialist, adventurer, sailor, world traveler, farmer, and charismatic media-magnet. As one of the first authors to use his fame to endorse advertising products, London was comfortable in the spotlight. His books were widely known and continue to be internationally popular today. London was born in 1876 in Oakland, California to a single mother who eventually remarried. He developed a taste for travel and adventure at a very young age. By the time he started high school, young Jack had already worked in a cannery, sailed for Japan on a sealing ship, traveled around the country and spent 30 days in a New York jail for vagrancy. And that was just the beginning of a lifetime of adventure. His next trip, after high school in 1897, was to the Yukon in search of gold and soon afterward his creative energies poured forth. Returning to California, he began to concentrate on writing, forcing himself to write 1,000 words a day. By 1899 his stories were being published in the Atlantic Monthly and other magazines. The House of Happy Walls (Museum) Built by Charmian London in 1919-26, this house is similar to Wolf House in some ways - the Spanish-style roof tiles and walls of field stone, for example - but it is much smaller and more formal. Charmian lived here whenever she was not traveling abroad or staying with relatives. After her death in 1955 at the age of 84, her will directed that the house be used as a memorial to Jack London and as a museum that would house the London collection of photographs and exhibits about the life and adventures of the world-famous author. It also contains a park visitor center where you can purchase books by and about Jack London. Much of the furniture in the house was designed by the Londons and custom-built for use in Wolf House. He is one of the most extensively translated of American authors. London studied magazines and then set himself a daily schedule of producing sonnets, ballads, jokes, anecdotes, adventure stories, or horror stories, steadily increasing his output. The optimism and energy with which he attacked his task are best conveyed in his autobiographical novel Martin Eden (1909), perhaps his most enduring work. Within two years stories of his Alaskan adventures, though often crude, began to win acceptance for their fresh subject matter and virile force. His first book, The Son of the Wolf (1900), gained a wide audience. During the remainder of his life he produced steadily, completing 50 books of fiction and nonfiction in 17 years.
