Long, William Joseph William ''Bill'' Joseph Long, age 54, passed away at the V.A. Hospital in Mather, Calif., on Wednesday, March 10, 2010. He was born on January 26, 1956, in Chicago, Ill., to the late Louis David Long Jr. and Donna Mae (Long) Young. He attended St. Felicitas Grade School and Rich East High School. He enlisted in the Marine Corps and following training at Camp Pendleton, Calif., he served in Okinawa, Japan. His battalion was involved in the Mayaguez Incident. Bill received various awards during his term of service and was proud of his military commitment. Upon discharge from the military, he moved to California and was a partner in a family run business in the Sacramento area for the past 30 years. Bill loved gambling and was known to many as ''Boxcar Willie'' and ''Jack Potter''. He'd often say, ''pay me, don't play me''. His other passions included tinkering on cars and Bill was the go to guy if anyone needed anything fixed. He was preceded in death by his sister Margaret Ellen (Long) Orr. He is survived by son Nicholas David Long of Las Vegas, Nev., sisters Lynda (Jim) Casey of Poquoson, Va., and Mary Long of St. Petersburg, Fla.; brothers Steven (Nora) Long of Rancho Murieta, Calif., and James Long of Mather, Calif.; and many nieces, nephews and friends. Bill will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. There will be no services at this time. Interment will be private. A celebration of life will be held later this year. Friends and family will be notified. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society . Published in The Sacramento Bee on May 9, 2010
