Special Section: A Night with the Royal Mummies
"...Here, in each coffin over which we bend, there is a face which stares at usor else closes its eyes in order that it may not see us...And each royal mummy that our lantern lights reserves for us a fresh surprise and the shudder of a different fear..." The Flickr video above gives us a glimpse of the Royal Mummy Room at the Egyptian Museum as it appears today, a century after Pierre Loti's visit as recounted below. At the turn of the century, the French writer Pierre Loti visited Egypt and recorded his experiences in his book, La mort de Philae One of his adventures involved a midnight tour of the Museum of Antiquities in Cairo, led by Gaston Maspero, then head of the Antiquities Service. A lover of unusual atmosphere and drama, Maspero led Loti through the dark halls of the museum by lamplight, and eventually they came upon the royal mummies. Loti describes this unusual experience in terms that would have delighted Edgar Allan Poe, and his evocative account captures the mysterious ambience that is a genuine and significant aspect of our heritage from ancient Egypt. His colorful prose enables us to appreciate the emotional impact of an encounter with the royal Egyptian dead, and reminds us that the mummies catalogued here in dry, technical terms on this website also possess a human dimension that is an undeniable part of their lasting fascination. So let us journey with Pierre Loti and Gaston Maspero as they traverse the shadowy corridors of the Egyptian Museum

26. Pierre Loti Visits KV35
Excerpt from La mort de Philae. An account of a visit to the Valley of the Kings. At the time, Amenhotep II s mummy was still there, deep underground.
http://anubis4_2000.tripod.com/subpages1/Loti2.htm
A Visit to KV35 "...Over and above the mere descent into the secret bowels of the rock there has been a kind of seizure with vertigo, which we had not anticipated and which has whirled us far away into the depths of the ages..."
While in Egypt during the early years of the 20'th century, French writer Pierre Loti traveled to Luxor, where he crossed the Nile and visited the Valley of the Kings. While in the Royal Valley, Loti descended into the tomb of Amenhotep II (KV 35), in the depths of which, at that time, the mummy of the Pharaoh and several other mummies still reposed. Let us join Pierre Loti as he enters KV 35 for An Audience With Amenophis II....
King Amenophis II. has resumed his receptions, which he found himself obliged to suspend for three thousand, three hundred and some odd years, by reason of his decease. They are very well attended; court dress is not insisted upon, and the Grand Master of ceremonies is not above taking a tip. He holds them every morning in the winter from eight o'clock, in the bowels of a mountain in the desert of Libya; and if he rests himself during the remainder of the day it is only because, as soon as midday sounds, they turn off the electric light.
Happy Amenophis! Out of so many kings who tried so hard to hide for ever their mummies in the depths of impenetrable caverns he is the only one who has been left in his tomb. And he "makes the most of it" every time he opens his funeral salons.

Loti, Pierre,
pseudonym of LOUIS-MARIE-JULIEN VIAUD (b. Jan. 14, 1850, Rochefort, Fr.d. June 10, 1923, Hendaye), novelist whose exoticism made him popular in his time and whose themes anticipated some of the central preoccupations of French literature between World Wars. Loti's career as a naval officer took him to the Middle and Far East, thus providing him with the exotic settings of his novels and reminiscences. Following his naval schooling and training, he was promoted ship's lieutenant in 1881 and during 1885-91 saw service in Chinese waters. His subsequent promotions led to an appointment as ship's captain in 1906. After the publication of his first novel, (1879), he rapidly developed a parallel literary career, winning the respect of critics and the devotion of a large public. With such successes as (1886) and Each year there was a new book, sometimes a novel Ramuntcho (1906)often treating objectively the love affairs with which he tried to satisfy his dreams and melancholy at every landfall, and sometimes a volume in which he himself figured Le Roman d'un enfant Prime Jeunesse Un Jeune Officier pauvre (1923)which reflected most fully his passionate nature.

Loti, Pierre (Julien Viaud) (1850-1923) page: Conclusion Viaud's novels never deal with homosexuality directly, but then neither does Oscar Wilde's work, and he is regularly held up as the first important figure in English-language gay literature. and My Brother Yves were obvious enough to foster rumors about Viaud's homosexuality in the popular press of the day. Others, like Iceland Fisherman, Ramuntcho, Judith Renaudin, and The Awakened, have had to wait longer for gay readings. Read in chronological order, Viaud's novels present the story of a gay man working to come to an understanding of his feelings and who he is as a result of them, the first novelistic corpus in Western literature to do so. It would be a half-century before any other major novelist in English or French undertook something similar in so positive a fashion. Sponsor Message.
