Born into a wealthy and well-known Bostonian family, Lowell gave no early indication of the obsession that would come to dominate his life and create an enduring romance involving extraterrestrial canals (see canals on Mars ) and an advanced martian civilization (see life on Mars ). At Harvard, where for 24 years his brother was president, he showed a talent for mathematics and even presented an astronomical address entitled "The Nebular Hypothesis". But following his graduation, he devoted the next 17 years to family business concerns and three extended stays in the Orient. He served as Foreign Secretary and Counselor to the first Korean diplomatic mission and, during his time in Korea and Japan, wrote four books on Eastern thought and culture. Then, for some reason which is not entirely clear, he caught the Mars bug. Perhaps he had been inspired by reading Flammarion 's popular treatise on the planet. Or, it may have been

Lowell, Percival
(b . March 13, 1855, Boston, Mass., U.S.d. Nov. 12, 1916, Flagstaff, Ariz.), American astronomer who predicted the existence of the planet Pluto and initiated the search that ended in its discovery. A member of the distinguished Lowell family of Massachusetts (he was brother to A. Lawrence Lowell and Amy Lowell), he devoted himself (1883-93) to literature and travel, much of the time in the Far East, which he described in The Soul of the Far East Noto (1891), and Occult Japan (1895). During part of this time he was counselor and foreign secretary to the Korean Special Mission to the United States. In the 1890s, inspired by Giovanni Schiaparelli's discovery of "canals" on Mars, Lowell decided to devote his fortune and energy to the study of Mars . After careful consideration of desirable sites, he built a private observatory at Flagstaff, Ariz. Lowell championed the now-abandoned theory that intelligent inhabitants of a dying Mars constructed a planet-wide system of irrigation, utilizing water from the polar ice caps, which melt annually. He thought the canals were bands of cultivated vegetation dependent on this irrigation. Among his many books on this subject is Mars and Its Canals (1906). Lowell's theory, long vigorously opposed, was finally put to rest by information received from the U.S. spacecraft Mariner 4 when it flew past Mars in July 1965.
