A.D. 39 - A.D. 65
Online Medieval and Classical Library Release #16b
Originally written in Latin, approximately A.D. 61-65, by the Roman poet Lucan, and probably left unfinished upon his death in A.D. 65. Although the work has been generally known through most of history as the "Pharsalia", modern scholarship tends to agree that this was not Lucan's choice for a title. English translation by Sir Edward Ridley, 1896. The text of this edition is based on that published as "The Pharsalia of Lucan", as translated by Sir Edward Ridley (Longmans, Green, and Co., London, 1896). This edition is in the PUBLIC DOMAIN in the United States. This electronic edition was edited, proofed, and prepared by Douglas B. Killings (DeTroyes@AOL.COM), May 1996. Preparer's Notes
CONTENTS PREPARER'S NOTES: Lucan's "Pharsalia" (or, "Civil War", as many scholars now prefer to call it) was written approximately a century after the events it chronicles took place.

Two brief ancient biographies by Vacca and Suetonius , along with references in Tacitus 's Annals and one of Statius 's Silvae , allow for the reconstruction of a modest biography. Lucan was the grandson of Seneca the Elder and grew up under the tutelage of his uncle Seneca the Younger . Born into a wealthy family, he studied rhetoric at Athens and was probably provided with a philosophical and Stoic education by his uncle. citation needed He found success under Nero , became one of the emperor's close friends and was rewarded with a quaestorship in advance of the legal age. The town lies at the confluence of the River Liffey and the River Griffeen , its tributary. The picturesque old town retains character, despite hosting ever-expanding areas of new housing that are essentially overspill developments for nearby Dublin. Historical populations Year Pop. In the Irish language, 'Leamhcáin' is translated to 'Lucan', meaning 'Place of the Elm Trees'. The name probably comes from a people that travelled by river, as Lucan is the first place that Elm trees are encountered if travelling inland from the Liffey. There is evidence of pre-historic settlement around Vesey Park, though not much archaeological investigation has been carried out in the area.

Oche Samhna
The Irish name for Halloween links us with our Celtic roots because Samhain marked the turning of the year, summers end, when the land fell into its winter sleep and the darker half of the year began. It was a time of transitions where the barriers between this world and the next seemed lower and realm of the supernatural came into everyday life.
Christians mark this time of year with the beautiful feast of All Saints, the evening of which is All Hallows Eve. Here we have a vision of Heaven, a vision of light which shines through the winter darkness which is so beautifully evoked in the readings from scripture which we hear at Mass on that day from the Book of Revelations - I John saw a large number, impossible to count, of people from every nation, race, tribe and language, they were standing in front of the throne, and in front of the Lamb, dressed in white robes and holding palms in their hands. It is a truly encouraging vision of heaven filled to the brim with people from everywhere.
On the day following All Souls we have the equally beautiful feast of All Souls when we come into an especially close communion with our loved one who have gone before us, we pray for them and we remember them. Those we remember in this way are alive in our hearts and we are linked to them in a radical solidarity, which we know as the communion of saints, a deep source of hope for us all. This beautiful vision is summed up in the reading from St. Paul, which we hear at mass on that day - Hope is not deceptive because the love of God has been poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit.

The introduction to this volume situates Lucan as a poet closely connected with the Stoics at Rome, working during the reign of the emperor Nero, in the genre inherited from Virgil. The selections are intended for third- and fourth-year college curricula, and include Lucan’s analysis of the causes of the civil war, depictions of his protagonists Caesar and Pompey at key moments—Caesar’s crossing of the Rubicon, the assassination of Pompey as he arrives in Egypt seeking refuge, Cato’s funeral oration for Pompey, Caesar’s visit to the site of Troy—as well as highly atmospheric passages: Pompey’s vision of his dead wife, Julia; and the necromancy performed by the witch Erichtho for Pompey’s son. Notes to the passages illuminate Lucan’s attitude towards his material—his reluctance to tackle the topic of civil war, his complicated relationship with Virgil’s

Home Library Classical Literature Companion Lūcan Marcus Annaeus Lucānus AD 39–65), Silver Latin poet, born at Corduba (Cordoba) in Spain. He was grandson of Seneca the Elder, and his father was the brother of Seneca the Younger (and the brother of Gallio of Acts 18). He was educated at Rome, studying philosophy under the Stoic Cornūtus, whose tuition he is said to have shared with the satirist Persius . He continued his studies at Athens but was recalled by the emperor Nero, who admitted him to his circle, made him quaestor and augur, and greatly admired him for a time. In AD 60 at the first celebration of the games called Neronia he won a poetic competition. In 62 or 63 he published three books of his epic Pharsalia (on the civil war between Caesar and Pompey). However, he incurred the enmity of Nero, for which various reasons are given; it is possible that the emperor was jealous of Lucan's literary success, having himself some claim to being a poet. Lucan was forbidden to write further poetry or to plead in the courts. He took to lampooning the emperor and even joined the conspiracy of Piso (64–5). When this was discovered Lucan, in spite of confessions and abject pleas, was compelled to commit suicide (as were his father and both uncles). There is a biography of him by
