Nigel Mortimer
August 2005
Hardcover
Book Description
The Benedictine monk John Lydgate was the most admired poet of the fifteenth century. He received commissions from some of the most powerful men in the land (including Henry V); he is spoken of with constant admiration; manuscripts of his work are abundant; many of his poems were put into
print by England's earliest printers, ensuring that his influence extended well into the sixteenth century. The Fall of Princes, probably the longest poem in the language, is arguably Lydgate's masterwork; yet, until now, it has received only cursory critical attention. This book offers the first
extended discussion of the poem.
The Fall of Princes accumulates accounts of nearly 500 figures from mythology and history (biblical, classical, and medieval) who have fallen from their positions of fame and power into... John Lydgate
Larry Scanlon Nov 2005 Hardcover Book Description John Lydgate Larry Scanlon Nov 2005 Paperback Book Description John Lydgate and the Making of Public Culture Maura Nolan Aug 2005 Hardcover Book Description During the fifteenth century John Lydgate was the most famous poet in England, filling commissions for the court, the aristocracy, and the guilds. He wrote for an elite London readership that was historically very small, but that saw itself as dominating the cultural life of the nation. Thus the new literary forms and modes developed by Lydgate and his contemporaries helped shape the development of English public culture in the fifteenth century. Maura Nolan presents a major re-interpretation of Lydgate's work and of his central role in the developing literary culture of his time.

Lydgate, John
(b. c . 1370, Lidgate, Suffolk, Eng.d. c . 1450, Bury St. Edmunds?), English poet , known principally for long moralistic and devotional works. In his Testament Lydgate says that while still a boy he became a novice in the Benedictine abbey of Bury St. Edmunds, where he became a priest in 1397. He spent some time in London and Paris; but from 1415 he was mainly at Bury, except during 1421-32 when he was prior of Hatfield Broad Oak in Essex. Lydgate had few peers in his sheer productiveness; 145,000 lines of his verse survive. His only prose work, The Serpent of Division (1422), an account of Julius Caesar, is brief. His poems vary from vast narratives such as The Troy Book and The Falle of Princis to occasional poems of a few lines. Of the longer poems, one translated from the French, the allegory Reason and Sensuality c . 1408) on the theme of chastity, contains fresh and charming descriptions of nature, in well-handled couplets. The Troy Book , begun in 1412 at the command of the prince of Wales, later Henry V, and finished in 1421, is a rendering of Guido delle Colonne's Historia troiana . It was followed by The Siege of Thebes , in which the main story is drawn from a lost French romance, embellished by features from Boccaccio.

Lydgate John
, an ancient English poet, is recorded as one of the immediate successors of Chaucer. The few dates that have been recovered of his history are, that he was ordained a sub-deacon in 1339; a deacon in 1393, and a priest in 1397; from these it has been surmised that he was born about 1375, that is, twenty-five years before the death of Chaucer. There is a note of Wanley’s in the Harleian Catalogue (2251. 3.) which insinuates as if Lydgate did not die till 1482. This Dr. Percy thinks too long a date; he was, however, living in 1446, since in his “ Philomela ” he mentions the death of Henry duke of Warwick , who died that year. Some authorities place his death in 1461, and this date Mr. Ellis thinks is not improbable. He was, says Warton, who of all our modern critics has considered him with most attention, a monk of the Benedictine abbey of Bury in Suffolk . After a short education at Oxford , he travelled into France and Italy ; and returned a complete master of the language and the Jiterature of both countries. He chiefly studied the Italian and French poets, particularly Dante, Boccaccio, and
