Edward George Earle Lytton Bulwer-Lytton, 1st Baron Lytton PC (25 May 1803 – 18 January 1873), was an English politician , poet, playwright, and prolific novelist. He was immensely popular with the reading public and wrote a stream of bestselling novels which earned him a considerable fortune. But, like many authors of the period, his style seems florid and embellished citation needed to modern tastes. He coined the phrases "the great unwashed"

A word from our supporters: File extension MET Note To The Present Edition, 1851. Night And Morning. Book I. Introductory Chapter. Chapter Ii. "philip Beaufort. ... Chapter X. "But, my dear fellow, consider what you risk." "I have considered all, and I find every chance in my favour. The bride will arrive here on the day of our wedding: my servant will be one witness; some stupid old Welshman, as antediluvian as possibleI leave it to you to select himshall be the other. My servant I shall dispose of, and the rest I can depend on." "But" "I detest buts; if I had to make a language, I would not admit such a word in it. And now, before I run on about Catherine, a subject quite inexhaustible, tell me, my dear friend, something about yourself."
How is it that certain words, and those the homeliest, which the hand writes and the eye reads as trite and commonplace expressionswhen spoken convey so much,so many meanings complicated and refined? "Ah! if you knew how I have suffered!" When the lover heard these words, his gay countenance fell; he drew back his conscience smote him: in that complaint was the whole history of a clandestine love, not for both the parties, but for the womanthe painful secrecythe remorseful deceitthe shamethe fearthe sacrifice. She who uttered those words was scarcely sixteen. It is an early age to leave Childhood behind for ever!

Chapter I. ... Chapter Xv. "They have for mine," answered I: "but then I am naturally a dreamer; and a contemplative egotist is always to me a mirror in which I behold myself." At this part of our conference, the bell swinging hoarsely through the long avenues, and over the silent water, summoned us to the grand occupation of civilized life; we rose and walked slowly towards the house. "Does not," said I, "this regular routine of petty occurrence, this periodical solemnity of trifles, weary and disgust you? For my part, I almost long for the old days of knight-errantry, and would rather be knocked on the head by a giant, or carried through the air by a flying griffin, than live in this circle of dull regularities, the brute at the mill." "You may live even in these days," answered St. John, "without too tame a regularity. Women and politics furnish ample food for adventure, and you must not judge of all life by country life." "Nor of all conversation," said I, with a look which implied a compliment, "by the insipid idlers who fill our saloons. Behold them now, gathered by the oriel window, yonder; precious distillers of talk, sentinels of society with certain set phrases as watchwords, which they never exceed; sages, who follow Face's advice to Dapper

Round the lamp which o'er My chamber sheds its lonely beam, Is wisely spread the varied lore Which feeds in youth our feverish dream The dreamthe thirstthe wild desire, Delirious yet divine-to know; Around to roamabove aspire And drink the breath of Heaven below! From Ocean-Earth-the Stars-the Sky To lift mysterious Nature's pall; And bare before the kindling eye In MAN the darkest mist of all Alas! what boots the midnight oil? The madness of the struggling mind? Oh, vague the hope, and vain the toil, Which only leave us doubly blind! What learn we from the Past? the same Dull course of glory, guilt, and gloom I ask'd the Future, and there came

Chapter I. ... Chapter Xv. That night, as I was undressing, I heard a gentle rap at the door, and Aubrey entered. He approached me timidly, and then, throwing his arms round my neck, kissed me in silence. I had not for years experienced such tenderness from him; and I sat now mute and surprised. At last I said, with the sneer which I must confess I usually assumed towards those persons whom I imagined I had a right to think ill of: "Pardon me, my gentle brother, there is something portentous in this sudden change. Look well round the room, and tell me at your earliest leisure what treasure it is that you are desirous should pass from my possession into your own." "Your love, Morton," said Aubrey, drawing back, but apparently in pride, not anger; "your love: I ask nothing more." "Of a surety, kind Aubrey," said I, "the favour seems somewhat slight to have caused your modesty such delay in requesting it. I think you have been now some years nerving your mind to the exertion."
