56. Badass Of The Week: Darius The Great
Trans. Macaulay, G.C. Spark, 2004. King, L.W., and Thompson, R.C. The Sculptures and Inscription of Darius the Great. British Museum, 1907.

Badass of the Week.

Darius the Great
"Within these lands, whosoever was a friend, him have I surely protected;
Whosoever was hostile, him have I utterly destroyed."
The Persian Empire gets a bad rap. Despite the fact that these guys went out and forged one of the largest, wealthiest, and most ridiculously powerful land empires ever assembled, it seems like every time we read about them they're getting brained over the head by some random iteration of the Greek phalanx or kicked in the nuts by a large screaming European with an out-of-control beard and a six-pack of abs so cut it looks like it was chiseled from a solid chunk of the planet Krypton. Seriously, it seems like the only time you really hear any reference to the badassitude of the Persians is in the preface to a book about how Alexander the Great came in and conquered their asses without breaking a sweat. This is total bullcrap. Back before the Macedonian conqueror was a twinkle in his psychotic mother's evil, pulsating eye, ultra turbo hardasses like Darius of Persia were out there using their insane powers of colon destruction to lay waste to the countryside and exert their utter and complete dominance over the Middle East in the most violent and awesome ways imaginable.
Once Cyrus and his line were officially regicided, the miscellaneous tribes of the Middle East foolishly thought they could just run off and do their own thing without having to worry about any kind of ultra-gory retribution. Immediately after Darius took office he was confronted with nine open revolts, and all of a sudden he found himself needing to almost completely re-conquer the Persian Empire. Well whereas it took Cyrus and entire lifetime to forge Persia into a mighty empire Darius required just eleven months to complete the seemingly-daunting task and bring the traitorous tribes back into the fold. This is pretty damn impressive, especially considering that even Alexander the Great needed nine years to conquer Persia, and he was pretty much just fighting one army, let alone nine.

EXTRACTS for HAMPSHIRE from FROISSART'S CHRONICLES, 13251400 These notes are taken from-Froissart, John, Sir Berners, Lord (translator) Macaulay, G C (editor) 1895 1908
Map Notes
These notes are taken from:-
This is not the best edition to work from; abridged, modernised spellings, some errors corrected ... rather than having these things pointed out in footnotes to an 'accurate' text. But it's the edition we have! The translation by John Bourchier, Lord Berners, was made at the command of Henry VIII, published in parts from 1523-25.
Jean Froissart
Jean Froissart, born about 1337 died about 1410 was a french chronicler during the Hundred Years War, covering the period 1325-1400. They are a literary work rather than a reliable history, giving a faithful view of the period and the spirit of chivalry.
Hundred Years War
The Hundred Years War started 1337. Hampshire was explicitly involved in only a few incidents, though Portsmouth and Southampton must have been important ports for transport and naval shipping throughout the period. The French sacked Southampton, 1338.
Froissart's Title Page
Froissart's title page, translated, reads:- Here begynneth the first volum of sir Johan Froyssart: of the cronycles of Englande, Fraunce, Portyngale, Scotlande, Bretayne, Flau~ders, and other places adioynynge. Translated out of Frenche into our maternal englysshe tonge by Johan Bourchier, knight, lorde Berners: At the co~maundement of oure most highe redouted souerayne lorde kyng Henry the viii., kyng of England and of Fraunce and high defender of the christen faythe, etc. ...

Macaulay is a computer algebra system for mathematical computations in algebraic geometry and commutative algebra. At its core is a carefully tuned implementation of Grobner basis methods for manipulating systems of polynomial equations. Macaulay's user base consists largely of academic researchers and graduate students. It consists of roughly 30,000 lines of C code, documentation, and contributed scripts in Macaulay's command language (which has been dubbed affectionately by some users as "algebraic machine language").
