Advertisements Biography of George MacDonald Biography Works By (12) Works About (1) George MacDonald - (1824-1905), Scottish novelist, clergyman and author George Macdonald was born at Huntly, in the western part of Aberdeenshire on 10 December, 1824, the son of George Macdonald, farmer, and Helen MacKay. He was educated in country schools where Gaelic myths and Old Testament stories abounded. He then went on to Aberdeen University in the early 1840's obtaining awards in Moral Philosophy and Sciences. Next he studied for the Congregationalist ministry at Highbury College, London. In 1850 he was made pastor at Arundel, West Sussex, England. MacDonald resigned however after three years of not living up to the congregational authorities’ expectations for more dogmatic sermons and being accused of heresy. Rejecting his Calvinist upbringing and doctrine of predestination, he came to believe in the divine presence but not divine providence and felt that everyone was capable of redemption. George MacDonald married Louisa Powell in 1851 and they had six sons and five daughters together. One of their sons, Greville Macdonald would later become a writer himself and author a biography of his father. After a stay in Algiers to gain his health back MacDonald returned to England to tutor and write to provide for his ever-growing family and preach freelance when time permitted. Despite his successful career as a published writer he was continually forced to rely on the charity of his friends. Lady Byron was one such patron who assisted him until her death in 1860 as well as John Ruskin. MacDonald was mentor to C.S. Lewis; formed a strong friendship with Mark Twain after a tumultuous start and G. K. Chesterton, Henry Longfellow, and Walt Whitman were also counted among his friends. Some of his early poetry was

The Highland Light Infantry of Canada was ordered to capture Speldrop, Germany, a strongly held nodal point blocking the expansion of the 51 Highland Division bridgehead North of the Rhine. "A" Company, was attacking the eastern half of the village which was strongly held by the enemy, who had machine gun posts sited in at least three buildings. Lieutenant George Oxley MacDonald's platoon was ordered to attack in daylight, under covering fire of a carrier section. Lieutenant George Oxley MacDonald led his platoon across 200 yards of open ground and successfully assaulted the first enemy positions although two more enemy machine gun posts beyond the objective and to the flank subjected the platoon to a withering fire. All NCO's in the platoon became casualties, but Lieutenant George Oxley MacDonald personally organized the consolidation of the objective and encouraged his men to hold the buildings, through it was discovered that at least two enemy tanks were active in the immediate area. As a result of his courage and determination, the platoon held the buildings and successfully contained the enemy machine gun posts, enabling another platoon to get into a position to clear them. This courageous and brilliant action largely contributed to the success of the Highland Light Infantry of Canada's attack.

Customer Reviews A Shorter Work with an Impressive Spiritual Lesson. I have just finished this novel and I was very pleasantly surprise at how good it was. The first couple of chapters are a little dull, but as the story gets moving, it is as good as any of George MacDonald's other stories. Now there is quite a bit of Scotch dialect and the story focuses more on one event than do some of the author's other works, but I found the spiritual insight very, very helpful. This book was the next to the last one that this author wrote. And he wrote it when he was 71 years old, so it represents an entire life of spiritual development. The story revolves around a young preacher, Mr. Blatherwick, who because he is self-confident and prideful, makes a very big mistake which dogs him like the hound of heaven throughout the story. He refuses to face himself, his faults and his need for a redeemer until his conscience almost drives him mad. He had become a preacher to make a name for himself, and in reality he had nothing to offer and everything to hide.
