View other movie reviews Find a movie: King Arthur The filmmakers behind the latest version of the King Arthur legend claim that theirs is the most historically accurate. In actuality, there is virtually no way of knowing who is correct and who is not, but one thing is for certain: this version strips away much of what made Arthur and his knights such an enduring legend. Gone is the magic of Merlin and Excalibur. The Round Table is barely there and most of the knights do not have enough time to establish personalities. The love triangle between Arthur, Guinevere, and Lancelot never develops. Mallory, Tennyson, and White must all be rolling in their graves. King Arthur takes place a few hundred years before most of the conventional Arthurian myths do. If anything, it feels like more of an attempt to make a huge summer blockbuster than anything else. Shades of Gladiator and Braveheart constantly peek out, but overall, King Arthur just feels silly. Britain is still in the hands of Rome, and Arthur (Clive Owen

    Description
An experiment into the sources of the human brain through the mind of a young woman has gone horribly wrong. She has seen the great God Pan and will die giving birth to a daughter, Helen Vaughan. Helen Vaughan becomes the source of much fevered speculation when, twenty years later, she is feted as a society hostess of great charm. Many men are infatuated with her beauty, but great beauty has a price, sometimes you have to pay with the only thing you have left. "The Great God Pan" was a sensation when first published in 1894. Its author, Arthur Machen, was a struggling unknown author living in London. He had translated Casanova's memoirs and was living on a small inheritance. He immediately became one of the most talked about writers of the last years of the nineteenth century.

Over the next few weeks, though Guinevere is destined to pad down with Arthur, she does cast a few glances toward Lancelot, but one wonders what she sees in him or any of the other knights since nobody, not even the female warrior, is blessed with the slightest character development. When Arthur ultimately decides that he's no longer fighting for Rome but for a higher cause, we strain our ears to hear that, like our president today, his higher cause is freedom–to the cheers of the unwashed in the background. Huh? Freedom from what? Not even the alleged slavery is given any exploration, so we're about as in the dark about Arthur's motive as we are about Mr. Bush's. All in all, a forgettable epic drowned out by music and, speaking of drowning, there is a nifty scene that will remind biblical scholars of the parting of the Red Sea.

Perhaps by now you are wondering...
    ...just who was Arthur Machen?
Very briefly, a writer with an unusual ability to touch the twin sublimes of wonder and terror...
    ...just another cult writer, then?
The Friends of Arthur Machen say not. We'd like to point out..... .....that his words echo and return in the mind, in a way more expected of a poet. Try a sample quotation or two .....that his writing has a kind of landscaping power, to evoke both the wildness of his native Wales , and the phantasmagorical sublimity of late Victorian London .....that his novel The Hill of Dreams is perhaps the finest exploration ever written of the theme of the accursed artist. .....that he was a major figure in the decadence of 1890s London. .....that his 1914 short story "The Bowmen" gave rise to the World War One legend of The Angels of Mons. .....that his achievement should rank alongside far better known contemporaries , such as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Robert Louis Stevenson or Oscar Wilde. STORY PREFACE
When Rome left its province of Britannia for good in 410 A.D. , after more than three centuries of rule, the native population had little protection against intruders. Thirty years later (or so), looking for help outside their own boundaries, native Britons (a Celtic people from Angulus (the Angles) and Germans from Saxony (the Saxons) to work as mercenaries. Their pay? Briton land. Had those early Britons envisioned what could happen when mercenaries (invited or not) reached their shores, perhaps they would have looked elsewhere (or nowhere) for help. One thing is certain: Requests for Anglo-Saxon help ultimately led to unwelcome invasions which forever changed Britannia and her people. Author: Carole D. Bos, J.D. Arthur Rimbaud
One of the world’s most influential writers, “child-poet” (Secondary Moon / Primary Venus) Arthur Rimbaud, né Jean-Nicolas-Arthur Rimbaud, was born in Charleville, France, almost directly under the setting position of his Primary Pluto. His equally underaspected Primary Venus rises over the northwest corner of France, thereby placing his entire native land under a Primary Venus-Pluto Transcendental Midpoint-Field. Rimbaud completed his first collection of verse when he was only sixteen years old, then he ran away to Paris. As we can see in his astrocartography, the French capital lies precisely in the center of his Venus / Pluto Transcendental Midpoint-Field.

pseudonym of ARTHUR LLEWELLYN JONES (b. March 3, 1863, Caerleon, Monmouthshire, Eng.d. Dec. 15, 1947, Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire), Welsh novelist and essayist, a forerunner of 20th-century Gothic science fiction. Machen's work was deeply influenced by his childhood in Wales and his readings in the occult and metaphysics. He lived most of his life in poverty as a clerk, teacher, and translator. In 1902 he became an actor with Benson's Shakespearean Repertory Company. And, in 1912, approaching his 50th birthday, he joined the staff of the London Evening News The quality of Machen's writing was demonstrated early in World War I when the newspaper published the short story "The Angel of Mons" from The Bowmen and Other Legends of War (1915), which circulated widely as a true story and gave hope to thousands of soldiers in battle. Like Thomas Hardy, Machen responded to the spiritual power and antiquity of the British countryside. His fantasies are often set in medieval England or Wales, as in the autobiographical The Hill of Dreams (1907), which evokes ancient Roman forts and Welsh mysteries. Even his stories set in London are deeply romantic and nostalgic for a pre-industrial era. Other works include

    Biography
Arthur Baker (Born April 22, 1955, Boston, Massachussets, USA) is a record producer and DJ best known for his work with hip-hop artists like Afrika Bambaataa, and the British group New Order. Baker's career began as a club DJ in Boston in the early 70s, where he was known for playing crowd-pleasing soul and Philly soul. Nonetheless, he had little patience for DJ'ing, saying in an interview: "[If] I didn't get a good reaction on a record, I'd just rip it off, break it up and throw it on the dancefloor." In 1981, Baker moved to New York, where he continued to DJ whilst pursuing a career as a producer. His first succesful single was "Happy Days", which he released under the name North End on Emergency Records in 1981. He went on to work for hip-hop label Tommy Boy Records, where he produced Afrika Bambaataa and the Soul Sonic Force's "Planet Rock" single, which was a hit in the summer of 1982. The record combined elements from two Kraftwerk recordings, "Trans Europe Express" and "Numbers", which were imitated by studio musicians, rather than sampled. Following this success, and others, Baker came to the attention of Manchester pop group New Order, who asked him to remix their singles "Confusion". The 12" single was a crossover hit on the US dance charts, and established a relationship between Baker and the band which has continued for more than twenty years. This also set a precedent for dance remixes of rock recordings which have now become commonplace.
