THE D'O YLY C ARTE O PERA C OMPANY Alexander Mackenzie Alexander Mackenzie (cond., 1897) [Born Edinburgh 22 Aug 1847, died London 28 Apr 1935] Sir Alexander Campbell Mackenzie was widely recognized as the greatest Scottish composer of his day. As a youth he went to Germany to study at the Saunderhausen Conservatory (1857-62), winning the King's Scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music in 1862. In 1865 he returned to his native Edinburgh, where he spent 14 years as violinist, teacher, and choir conductor. In 1879 he went to Florence and devoted himself to composition, until 1888 when he was appointed principal of the Royal Academy of Music, a post he held until 1924. He was knighted in 1895. Mackenzie's only association with the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company was a composer and first night conductor of His Majesty , a two-act comic opera written by F. C. Burnand, R. C. Lehmann, and Adrian Ross, and produced at the Savoy on February 20, 1897. His Majesty ran for just 61 performances, closing on April 24, 1897. It was also performed by the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company on tour. Mackenzie wrote five operas in all.

Blog Moving
Sorry everyone for not keeping up with the blog. It feels like more of a medical diary and, to be honest, I'm getting burnt out on writing about the same things over and over and over and over.
SO!
I'm in the process of starting up a new "family blog" where I don't feel tied down to talking about Mac's medical progress. Don't get me wrong, I'm extremely proud of how well she's doing... but I think it's time to address her as budding toddler-to-be. ;o)
I'll post the new link and all that good stuff when it's finally up and running. I'm in the midst of training our new day nurse (yes, we finally found one!), so it may take a week or so.
See you soon! Posted by Niff and Andy at 3:35 PM 3 comments Links to this post

Feet!
Yesterday Mackenzie really discovered her feet! She's noticed them before but never showed much interest, but yesterday she was all about them. It was absolutely adorable. :o) I love milestone moments.
And my cuddler continues to be a cuddler. And biter. If she had teeth, I'd be in big trouble because she's always mouthing on me. I don't mind for right now, but we may have to have a chat with those teeth finally break through (which hasn't happened yet, obviously).
We have her napping okay on an HME once a day. Our goal is to get her napping well on an HME before we start weaning the CPAP (with the thought that she will need a good rest at night to recoup from the HME during the day). So far, so good. She does work a little harder with the HME on sometimes (especially during her nap), but I think in a week or two we can try 2 naps.
Alright, I'm off to finish getting ready for our trip to UNC today. Mackenzie's having her MicKey button replaced. It should be a "quick" and easy trip. We're leaving at 7am and hopefully should get back in town around 2:30 or 3pm. Posted by Niff and Andy at 5:30 AM

VIOLIN CONCERTO IN C SHARP MINOR, OP. 32, AND PIBROCH SUITE, OP. 42
notes by Duncan Barker
Hyperion CDA66975 The violin has always played a significant role in the life of the Scottish composer Sir Alexander Campbell Mackenzie (1847-1935). His father, Alexander Mackenzie (1819-57), was the principal violinist and leader of the band at the Theatre Royal in Edinburgh, and was keen for his eldest son to follow in his footsteps. He arranged for the young Alexander to study music abroad in Schwarzburg-Sondershausen, Germany, playing second violin in the ducal orchestra and benefiting from his exposure to some of the most advanced music of the day in the scores of Wagner and Liszt.
On his return to Britain Mackenzie entered the Royal Academy of Music as a pupil of Prosper Sainton VIOLIN CONCERTO IN C SHARP MINOR, OP. 32

Descriptive Biography C anada's second prime minister Alexander Mackenzie, was a nation builder of a literal sort. When he became Canada's first Liberal prime minister in 1873, he brought with him both his stonemason's skill and his democratics principles. Born in Perthshire, Scotland, he emigrated to Canada in 1842 to follow his sweethart, Helen Neil. Trained as a stonemason, he soon founded work in the rapidly growing provinces of Canada East and West. One of his first jobs was to build a bomb-proof stone arch at Fort Henry in Kingston. his next task was working on the Beauharnois Canal near Montreal. Many of the monuments raised by Mackenzie still stand in Ontario; the Welland Canal, the martello towers at Fort Henry, the Episcopal Church and bank in Sarnia courthouses and jails in Chatham amd Sandwich.
