Biography
Maurice Maeterlinck was born in Ghent, Belgium, in a wealthy, French-speaking family. He wrote poems and short novels during his studies, which he destroyed later; only fragments are left.
After finishing his law studies, he spent a few months in Paris, France. He met there some members of the then new Symbolism movement, Villiers de l'Isle Adam in particular. The latter would have a big influence on the work of Maeterlinck.
He became famous with his play La princesse Maleine in 1890, and was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1911. Main themes in his work are death and the meaning of life.
He had a relationship with the singer Georgette Leblanc from 1895 till 1918. In 1919 he married Renée Dahon; together they went to the United States.
In 1930 he bought a château in Nice, France, and named it Orlamonde, a name occurring in his work Quinze Chansons.
He was made a count by King Albert I of Belgium in 1932. In 1939 he flew to the United States, and stayed there until 1947.

The guileless have said that Maeterlinck belongs to no period. This is because they have lost themselves so completely in his mystical forests that they can no longer see the wood of modernity for the trees of illusion. To them his magic is witchcraft. In seeking the source of the rainbow, they have found nothing but mist. Nevertheless, the period claims him. The opportunity of realism comes with the age of false romance. And, in the same sequence, there is a time for magic. It is the hour when all the world is matter-of-fact. The early eighteen-nineties saw the advanced theatre besieged by social dramatists. They formed a European ring; Ibsen Strindberg , Tolstoy, Hauptmann, Henri Becque and the authors of the . Their social gospels varied, but they all practiced in common the outward technique of realism, with its perfection of modern dialogue and setting. The subject varied, too. Here it was the life of the bourgeoisie , there that of the peasantry or the slums. Social politics were touched upon, as in

Our reason may prove what it will: our reason is only a feeble ray that has issued from Nature. How strangely do we diminish a thing as soon as we try to express it in words. Biography
Belgian dramatist, essayist, poet, playwright, philosopher, lawyer and naturalist, winner of the 1911 Nobel Prize for Literature. In 1932 he was made a count by the Belgian king. His books include "The Blind," 1891 and "The Interior," 1892, as well as several studies of nature. Maeterlinck's writing successes were primarily a result of an inheritance of property that he received; he did not have to work, so he was able to devote all of his time to writing. Associated with actress Georgette Leblanc, he broke his relationship with her to marry Renee Dahon. He lived in the U.S. from 1940-1947 and died on 5/06/1949, Nice, France

The first work published by Maurice Maeterlinck was a slim collection of verses entitled Serres chaudes (1889) [Ardent Talons]. These poems appear more tormented than one would have expected from his calmly meditative disposition. The same year (1889) he published a dramatic fantasy, La Princesse Maleine . It is sombre, terrifying, and deliberately monotonous due to numerous repetitions intended to give an impression of duration; but a delightful fairy-tale charm reigns in this little drama, which is written with a vigour one would not have suspected in the author of the Serres chaudes . It is in any case an important work of art. La Princesse Maleine was enthusiastically praised by Octave Mirbeau in Le Figaro
A more pronounced deism would have had a beneficial influence on his dramas because it would have made them less similar to shadow plays; but one should not disparage the creations of his genius. Like Spinoza and Hegel, who were great thinkers though not deists, Maeterlinck is a very great poet although his conception of things and of life is not that of a deist. He does not deny anything: he simply finds the principle of existence hidden in the shadows. Besides, is not agnosticism in some degree excusable, since no human reason could ever formulate an exact notion of the origin of existence which in many aspects is accessible only to intuition and to faith? And if Maurice Maeterlinck's characters are sometimes creatures of dreams, they are still very human, for Shakespeare was not wrong in stating:
