Mansfield, Katherine
From New World Encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation search Previous (Katharine Hepburn) Next (Kathmandu) Katherine Mansfield (October 14, 1888 – January 9, 1923) was a prominent modernist writer of short fiction. She was born into a middle class family in Wellington, New Zealand . Throughout her childhood, she took an extreme interest in music and literature, and would eventually go on to write a number of short stories and novels. She is said to be New Zealand's most famous writer, who was closely associated with D.H. Lawrence and something of a rival of Virginia Woolf . Mansfield's creative years were burdened with loneliness, illness, jealousy, alienation—all reflected in her work with the bitter depiction of marital and family relationships of her middle-class characters. Her short stories are also notable for their use of stream-of-consciousness. Like the Russian writer Anton Chekhov , Mansfield depicted trivial events and subtle changes in human behavior. Without the company of her literary friends, family, or her husband, she wrote much about her own roots and her childhood, reflecting the breakdown of the family in modern culture. Mansfield died of a pulmonary hemorrhage on January 9, 1923, in Gurdjieff Institute, near Fontainebleau, France

Katherine Mansfield (1888-1923) - Pseudonym of Kathleen Murry, original name Kathleen Mansfield Beauchamp "Henry was a great fellow for books. He did not read many nor did he possess above half a dozen. He looked at all in the Charing Cross Road during lunch-time and at any odd time in London; the quantity with which he was on nodding terms was amazing. By his clean neat handling of them and by his nice choice of phrase when discussing them with one or another bookseller you would have thought that he had taken his pap with a tome propped before his nurse's bosom. But you would have been wrong." (from 'Something Childish But Very Natural') Katherine Mansfield was born in Wellington, New Zealand, into a middle-class colonial family. Her father, Harold Beauchamp, was a banker and her mother, Annie Burnell Dyer, was of genteel origins. She lived for six years in the rural village of Karori. Later on Mansfield said "I imagine I was always writing. Twaddle it was, too. But better far write twaddle or anything, anything, than nothing at all." At the age of nine she had her first story published. Entitled 'Enna Blake' it appeared in The High School Reporter in Wellington, with the editor's comment, that it "shows promise of great merit".

Mansfield, Katherine,
pseudonym of KATHLEEN MURRY, KATHLEEN MANSFIELD BEAUCHAMP (b. Oct. 14, 1888, Wellington, N.Z.d. Jan. 9, 1923, Gurdjieff Institute, near Fontainebleau, Fr.), New Zealand -born English master of the short story, who evolved a distinctive prose style with many overtones of poetry. Her delicate stories, focused upon psychological conflicts, have an obliqueness of narration and a subtlety of observation that reveal the influence of Anton Chekhov. She, in turn, had much influence on the development of the short story as a form of literature. After her education (in Wellington and London), Katherine Mansfield left New Zealand at the age of 19 to establish herself in England as a writer. Her initial disillusion appears in the ill-humoured stories collected in In a German Pension (1911). Until 1914 she published stories in Rhythm and The Blue Review, edited by the critic and essayist John Middleton Murry, whom she married in 1918 after her divorce from George Bowden. The death of her soldier brother in 1915 shocked her into a recognition that she owed what she termed a sacred debt to him and to the remembered places of her native country. Prelude (1918) was a series of short stories beautifully evocative of her family memories of New Zealand. These, with others, were collected in

Mansfield, Katherine (1888-1923) Though Katherine Mansfield was reticent in the depiction of lesbianism in her short stories, she had close female friendships and was always deeply concerned with the status of women. She was born Kathleen Mansfield Beauchamp in Wellington, New Zealand. Her closest relationship was with her grandmother, who figures as the most sympathetic figure in her "New Zealand" stories. A chronological arrangement of those stories by Ian Gordon, entitled Undiscovered Country (1974), provides an insight into her own perspective on her childhood. Sponsor Message.
