Overview This web site was created in order to help students understand human interactions and relationships as shown by Edgar Lee Masters in his Spoon River Anthology using an innovative and interactive method. Spoon River Anthology is ideally suited both for an interactive project and for the curricular objective for the Montgomery County 9th grade English unit on Relationships. The anthology consists of 244 poems which are interrelated with characters who are mentioned in several poems, and the anthology in its entirety tells 19 interrelated stories. Interactive programming languages such as HTML along with Internet is ideal for exploring these relationships and linking concepts. In the first year of the project, students identify the relationships contained in the anthology by creating web pages based on each character's relationships to other characters and then creating the hypertext links between the poems. By entering the data in a database such as FileMaker, students can search the web pages for interconnections among the characters.

Description
"Spoon River Anthology" is a collection of poetry taken from the tombstones of the dead in a small rural American town. There is of course no Spoon River as the entire town and its inhabitants are fictional. "Spoon River Anthology" is Masters's masterpiece, a collection of poetry that reveals the posthumous confessions of the transgressions of a group of small-town Americans. Together this collection reads like a novel exposing the fallacy in the idea of the rural American utopia. "Spoon River Anthology" is a truly original work of American literature. Masters, Edgar Lee
(b . Aug. 23, 1869, Garnett, Kan., U.S.d. March 5, 1950, Philadelphia), U.S. poet and novelist, best known as author of Spoon River Anthology Masters grew up on his grandfather's farm near New Salem, Ill., studied in his father's law office, and attended Knox College, Galesburg, Ill., for one year; he was admitted to the bar in 1891 and developed a successful law practice in Chicago. A volume of his verses appeared in 1898, followed by Maximilian , a drama in blank verse (1902); The New Star Chamber and Other Essays Blood of the Prophets (1905); and a series of plays issued between 1907 ( Althea ) and 1911 ( The Bread of Idleness If Masters had continued to write along these lines, he would not be remembered, but in 1909 he was introduced to Epigrams from the Greek Anthology . Masters was seized by the idea of composing a similar series of free-verse epitaphs in the form of monologues. The result was Spoon River Anthology (1915), in which the former inhabitants of Spoon River speak from the grave of their bitter, unfulfilled lives in the dreary confines of a small town. The community of Spoon River was fictitious; it was compounded of Petersburg and Lewistown, Ill., which Masters had known as a boy. In 1963 a staging of Spoon River Anthology was presented on Broadway and was played at many college and community theatres in subsequent years.

    Masters, Edgar Lee
Born Garnett, Kan., Aug. 23, 1869. Educated at Knox College, Ill. He studied law in his father's office and was admitted to the bar in 1891. Married Helen M. Jenkins, of Chicago, in 1898. Mr. Masters wrote several volumes of verse and several poetic dramas, which are now out of print, before he found himself in the "Spoon River Anthology", published first in `Reedy's Mirror' and in book form in 1915. This volume, written in free verse and containing about two hundred brief sketches, or posthumous confessions, shows Mr. Masters to be a psychologist of the keenest penetration, a satirist and humorist, laying bare unsparingly the springs of human weakness, but seeing with an equal insight humanity's finer side. "Spoon River Anthology", which had perhaps a wider recognition than that of any volume of verse of the period, was followed by "Songs and Satires", 1916; "The Great Valley", 1916; "Toward the Gulf", 1917; and "Starved Rock", 1920. Lowell, Amy
