Abel was born in Köthen , the son of Christian Ferdinand Abel , the principal viola da gamba and cello player in the court orchestra of Johann Sebastian Bach . There is no proof that Abel studied at the Thomasschule Leipzig , but it was on Bach's recommendation that in 1748 he was able to join Johann Adolph Hasse 's court orchestra at Dresden where he remained for ten years. In 1759 (or 1758 according to Chambers) , he went to England and became chamber-musician to Queen Charlotte . He gave a concert of his own compositions in London, performing on various instruments, one of which was a five-string cello known as a pentachord, which had been recently invented by John Joseph Merlin In 1762

(b . Feb. 25, 1842, Hohenstein-Ernstthal, Saxony [Germany]d. March 30, 1912, Radebeul, Ger.), German author of travel and adventure stories for young people, dealing with desert Arabs or with American Indians in the wild West, remarkable for the realistic detail that the author was able to achieve. May was a weaver's son. He was an elementary school teacher until arrested for petty theft. He later was twice arrested for fraud and spent several years in prison, where he is said to have read voraciously. After his release in 1874 May wrote short stories that were serialized in various periodicals. His popularity soared upon the appearance of his short-story collections and novels in the early 1890s. Some of the best known of his more than 60 works are Der Schatz im Silbersee (1894; "The Treasure in the Silver Lake"), In the Desert Winnetou , 3 vol. (1893; Eng. trans., 1977); Ardistan und Dschinnistan Ardistan and Djinnistan ), and the autobiography
