He wrote a number of highly influential textbooks, and was particularly important in the development of the theory of instinct and of social psychology in the English-speaking world. He was an opponent of behaviorism and stands somewhat outside the mainstream of the development of Anglo-American psychological thought in the first half of the twentieth century; but his work was very well known and respected among lay people. McDougall was educated at Owens College, Manchester and St John's College, Cambridge He also studied medicine and physiology in London and Göttingen . After teaching at University College London and Oxford , he was recruited by William James to Harvard University , where he served as a professor of psychology from 1920 to 1927. He then moved to

  • Print Cite Feedback McDougall, William (1871-1938) was a British psychologist who founded the school of purposive psychology, which suggested that humans and animals act for specific purposes, with the actions directed toward achieving certain goals. These actions, he believed, are motivated by basic, inherited instincts that are linked to emotions, including fear, disgust, wonder, anger, subjection, elation, and tenderness. He described this as hormic psychology, with the urge to live as the basic drive. He was born in Chadderton, Lancashire, England. In 1894, he received a B.A. degree at St. John's College, Cambridge University, and he earned two master's degrees in 1897 at St. Thomas Hospital in London. He then attended lectures in psychology at Cambridge and studied at Gottingen, Germany. From 1900 to 1904, he was a lecturer in psychology at University College, London, and conducted research in a laboratory he built in his house. In 1912, he was elected a fellow of the Royal Society and a fellow of Corpus Christi College, Oxford. In 1920, he published The Group Mind, in which he stated his belief that any highly structured group, such as a nation, has a mental organization (later called a Gestalt), which resides only partially in the mind of any one individual of the group. That year, he became a psychology professor at Harvard University. He created controversy there with his lectures on eugenics, a science that theorizes human intelligence and hereditary qualities are determined by race or breed. He also stated his belief in the superiority of the Nordic race and the hereditary origin of differences in mental ability of children from different social classes, as based on tests conducted by the army during World War I (1914–1918).

William McDougall (June 22, 1871 – November 28, 1938) was a British -born, American psychologist who pioneered work in human instinctual behavior and the development of social psychology . McDougall believed human behavior to be based on three faculties—intellect, emotion, and will—which were under instinctual control. His belief that human beings consisted of both body and mind , and his investigation of the human soul and paranormal phenomena directly opposed the behaviorist approach that was dominant in American psychology during his time. He rejected behaviorism, publicly debating John B. Watson . causing his own reputation to suffer. McDougall's belief in eugenics was equally unpopular in the West. Yet, His desire was to advance a better human society by maximizing human potential on all levels. While he did not succeed, his efforts provided a strong foundation for others to research in ethology , parapsychology, and social psychology, thus contributing to the advancement of knowledge and ultimately toward the achievement of full human potential.

Ideas and Interests William McDougall is considered by some to have been the foremost psychologist of all English-speaking countries. He has contributed significantly to more branches and departments of psychology than anyone else writing in English. He is the exponent of hormic psychology, the central idea being that there is an end or purpose which goads us to action, without any real knowledge of its nature, and often without benefit or even thought of pleasure. Human progress can only be determined in terms of "horme" or "drive". He theorized that human behavior is determined by both instinctive and intentional strivings. His chief difficulties lay in proving, or even explaining, interactionism in a physical world; his belief in free will; and his commitment to the theory of the transmission of acquired characteristics. We know that Archibald and Margaret, Disciples of Christ, arrived in Mimosa, Ontario in 1829. Archie was descended from John (father) and Farquar (grandfather)McDougall (circa 1750) of Scotland.
William Curzon's family arrived from England settling in Guelph, Ontario at the turn of the century (about 1900).
Also, on my mother's side of the family, her maternal lines include her great grandfather William Goulden and great grand mother Esther Brocklehurst. The Goulden and Brocklehurst families are of great interest to me. They are from Macclesfield, Cheshire, England.
On my father's maternal line, there are extensive files on this web page related to the Luxton family of Brushford, Devonshire and to the Linklater family of the Orkney Islands of northeast Scotland.
